Little to report from the Preakness horses today, as, happily, all seems to be well.
The only hiccup appeared to be the post position draw. For one thing, Orb drew the rail, which once upon a time was considered the garden spot and now seems to be perceived as the kiss of death.
Shouldn’t much matter to the son of Malibu Moon, though. His race isn’t likely to be decided by the break in any case, and jockey Joel Rosario likely would have been aiming him towards the rail; now he’ll already be there.
The bigger news du jour came from Friday’s co-feature, the $500,000 G2 Black-Eyed Susan. Sagamore Farm announced today that its stellar Maryland-bred filly, Walkwithapurpose, would skip that race. Installed as the 5-1 third choice on the morning line, the Sagamore homebred took a bad step at the end of her gallop this morning. Though x-rays were negative, Sagamore General Manager Tom Mullikin said the Farm would “take the necessary precautions” and skip the race.
In addition, Petit Trianon, 20-1 in the morning line for the Susan, is cross-entered on Saturday in a division of the Our Mims at Delaware. She is 2-1 in that race.
