It’s our weekly LookBack, in which we revisit some of last week’s top stories…
- Horacio Karamanos certainly had an eventful week. The veteran Midlantic rider piloted London Lane to a 50-1 upset in the G2 Colonial Turf Cup last weekend (here), made his 10,000th career start on Thursday at Colonial aboard Tape Deck (who came in third), and then won five races over the weekend, including two each on Saturday and Sunday. He also reminisced with our Nick Hahn about one of his greatest rides, aboard Tam’s Terms in the ’03 Da Hoss (here). Karamanos is leading the Colonial jockey colony this meet in both wins and earnings.
- Controversy continued to roil the Virginia Thoroughbred Association (VTA) this week, as three directors resigned their posts over the process that led to the firing of longtime executive director Glenn Petty (here). Those three — Anne Poulson, Ernie Oare, and Jens Von Lepel — subsequently issued a press release further outlining their position. “It is disturbing and disappointing that the Board simply dismisses these activities as ‘just business’ or ‘spilt milk’ with no hint of accountability or remorse,” the trio said in their release.
- The “Mr. TRF” contest was this weekend (here) at Colonial, and… “Congratulations to ‘Choice,’ the newly crowned 2013 Mr. TRF! He is a 15 year old gelding based at the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation at James Center, and he left Colonial Downs this evening aglow, and sporting a wreath of flowers! As a racehorse, he amassed $692,000 in earnings. In retirement, he is Mr. TRF!” So said the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation on its Facebook page…
- The Maryland Horse Breeders Association held its 79th annual Yearling Show this past Sunday in Timonium. The champ was a Maryland-bred (of course!) filly by Macho Uno, bred by Sagamore Farm. Her picture — courtesy of the Maryland TB instagram page (follow ’em here) — is the feature shot for this post.
