Nick’s Notes
Take a look at the Virginia breeder’s represented in Saturday’s Commonwealth Turf Festival. Among the Virginia-breds in the Bert Allen are those by Morgan’s Ford Farm, Audley Farm, homebreds by Larry Johnson, Darlene Bowlin, Albert Coppola and Nicewonder Stable. Other familiar breeders in state-bred stakes represented include Susan Cooney, William Backer, David Ross, Lady Olivia, Sam English, Lazy Lane, William Springer, Edward P. Evans, Bobby Sowder, Tucker , Overfelt…and my apologies for not listing the many et ceteras. Great to see Virginia breeders stuff the entry box for a day growing in popularity.
Wednesday night at Colonial Downs, Karen Dennehy Godsey and Hamilton Smith scored training doubles. Later that evening, Hamilton Smith got ticketed for riding a tricycle on the backstretch without a helmut. He told authorities that he had lended his protective gear to Karen Dennehy Godsey who with her previous training double over opening weekend, celebrated by trying to do a cartwheel while bareback on a young bucking colt. The acrobatics rewarded KDG with several head staples. No word on any feats as a result of Kalahari Queen and Pioneer Zephyr’s but a cable labeled with the tag”Welanda” has been stretched from the backstretch kitchen to the Colonial grandstand. Smith’s is reportedly keeping Marriage Fever and Country Sunshine at opposite sides of his shedrow believing while they can win in pairs, working together may result in the return of wedding ceremonies at Colonial Downs.
