In our LookBack, we follow up on some of last week’s top stories, plus some other notes of interest…
- A candidate for governor of Maryland suggested slashing racing’s share of slots revenue in half to help fund early childhood education, though his spokesman later said that it was just something to consider and not a proposal (here);
- Monmouth closed last weekend with gains in attendance and handle (here), and the Meadowlands opened this weekend for its all-turf Thoroughbred meet;
- Delaware Park also reached the end of its 2013 meet, and our handicapper Bobby Zen nailed the closing day late Pick Three (here), which was worth around $100;
- Speaking of handicapping, Gabby Gaudet continued her good roll (here). We mis-transcribed what would have been her winning Pick 4 ticket (which paid around $600 for a 0.50 unit) but she gave out the Pick 3 all the same, and that paid over $260 for 50 cents;
- Jockey Oliver Castillo took a nasty fall over the weekend and on Sunday underwent surgery. He reportedly “had torn a lot of the ligaments in his neck in addition to fracturing his leg near the ankle” (here).
