In our On Tap feature for the weekend, we posed several questions that the weekend’s racing would answer.  Today’s LookBack provides the answers:

  • Will Jerry Robb, whose barn is loaded with fast two year-olds, sweep the two Maryland Million juvenile races?
    • No.  Donald Barr trainee It’s a Bang dueled with Robb’s Joint Custody almost from the first jump and then wore that one down to take the Maryland Million Nursery.  Robb bounced back to take the next race, the Lassie, with heavily favored Jonesin for Jerry.  He then headed to Charles Town, where his Fred High won the West Virginia Breeders Classic S.
  • Which way does Ribo Bobo go: Sprint or Starter?
    • Sprint — and, boy, did he go!  He won the Maryland Million Sprint impressively over a short but accomplished field, besting 2012 De Francis winner Action Andy and recent Parx stakes winner Fersmiley by more than five lengths.  Ribo Bobo stopped the clock in 1:08 3/5 and earned a Beyer speed figure of 104.
  • Did King Leatherbury make the right choice by sending Ben’s Cat to the Maryland Million Turf?
    • Probably — but it didn’t matter.  Leatherbury was stuck betwixt and between with Ben’s Cat, a grass sprinter without a race.  His choices — a mile on the grass or six furlongs on the dirt — were unappealing.  He finally chose to duck Ribo Bobo and the sprinters — good choice (see above) — but Roadhog rallied late to edge Ben’s Cat in the Turf, at one mile.  The win was Roadhog’s second consecutive Maryland Million Turf triumph and denied Ben’s Cat a record-setting fourth Maryland Million victory.
  • Can anyone make Eighttofasttocatch sweat in the Maryland Million Classic?
    • No.  Eighttofasttocatch grabbed the lead the moment the gates opened, got away with a moderate opening quarter, and was never seriously challenged en route to his second (though non=consecutive) Classic victory; Romancing the Gold finished second.  The win led to a nice winner’s circle scene, with jockey Forest Boyce leaning down to kiss Eight’s 94 year-old, wheelchair-bound owner Arnold Heft.
  • Can two year-old speedball Amherst Street run his record to three straight while stretching out to 6 1/2 furlongs in the WVBC Moscarelli?
    • Yes.  The gelded son of Luftikus — one of two offspring of Luftikus to score on the day — grabbed the early lead and never looked back, winning by nearly two over the game Comeonletsplay.
  • Is Jax and Jill vulnerable at 6-5 in the WVBC WV Division of Tourism after a messy last out in the Charles Town Oaks?
    • Boy, was she ever!  The 3-10 favorite — one of eight horses on Charles Town’s evening card to go off at odds-on — pressed a hopeless long shot, made the lead — and then faltered.  She finished sixth, while Blisstikus just held off Dimples to get the money.
  • Can John A. Casey’s productive West Virginia mares deliver him a big day?  He has Here Comes Allen and I Did it That Time, both out of Let’s Just Do It, and Landon Did It and Mommy Did It, both out of Farsi Strada.
    • No.  All four horses finished up the track.
  • Can anyone — millionaire Russell Road, perhaps — stop Lucy’s Bob Boy in the $500,000 West Virginia Breeders Classic?
    • Yes.  Russell Road and Lucy’s Bob Boy dueled for much of the race before Russell Road disposed of his rival — but all of that work was for naught, as Fred High rallied late to nail Russell Road and take the big race.  Russell Road was second, while Lucy’s Bob Boy faded to ninth of 10.
