Claimbox: March Mid-Atlantic claiming stats

Weather?  Cancellations?

None of that seemed to matter much to the trainers who claim horses last month.  The number and value of the horses claimed in the mid-Atlantic region both jumped by more than 35 percent in March as compared to February.

More than $2.05 million of claims were made in the mid-Atlantic in March, up 35 percent from February.  The average value of those claims ticked up just slightly, less than one percent, to $10.473.

Overall, 196 horses were claimed at Parx Racing, Laurel Park, Penn National, and Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races in February.  That was 51 more than had been claimed in February, and 44 more than the 152 claimed in January.

Parx Racing once again was the region’s busiest track, with 78 horses claimed during the month with a combined value of $955,500 and an average of $12,250.  All three were tops in the region.  Laurel Park saw 61 horses claimed (average: $11,221), while Penn National had 42 claims (average: $7,560) and Charles Town had 15 (average: $6,350).

All of this claiming activity came despite difficult weather that forced the region’s tracks to cancel 19 times during March.
