Claiming activity in the mid-Atlantic region rose substantially in March versus February, according to an analysis of Equibase statistics. But March 2016 was merely equal in claiming activity to March 2015, and first quarter 2016 claiming activity lagged well behind that of 2015.
Overall, 197 horses were claimed in the mid-Atlantic region in March 2016. That was an 87.6 percent jump from the 105 horses claimed in February, and the total value of those claims, $1,868,000, was similarly 85.5 percent higher than February’s activity.
The jump in claiming activity was due in large measure to Parx Racing’s having been open all month, its first complete month of 2016. Eighty horses were claimed at Parx in March, up from just 17 in February.
For all that increase, however, the March 2016 numbers were basically flat compared to 2015. In March 2015, the region saw 196 horses claimed — and those for a higher value, $2,052,750, than in 2016. Indeed, the value of March 2015 claims was nine percent higher than this March.
What’s more, the number and value of claims in the first quarter of 2016 is well behind the 2015 pace. The 495 first-quarter claims recorded last year were nearly 16 percent higher than thus far this year, and the total value of those claims — over $5 million — was about 20 percent higher than 2016 to date.
Every track in the region except Laurel Park, which was closed for the first part of the month, saw claiming activity increase in March. Parx Racing led all tracks with 80 claims for a total value of $776,000, both tops regionwide. Laurel’s 40 claims generated a total value of $471,000, and the average there of $11,775 led the region. There were 59 horses claimed at Penn National — up from 26 in February — and 18 at Charles Town.
