From the Spa: August 24 Midlantic-breds in Saratoga stakes
“From the Spa,” written by our on-site correspondent Joe Aiello, III, returns to keep you up-to-date on horses bred in the mid-Atlantic racing in Saratoga stakes.
Wednesday’s feature race at Saratoga is the 1 5/8 mile John’s Call Stakes. The race is named after the famous gelding John’s Call, who is the oldest Grade I winner in recorded thoroughbred history, winning at nine years old. John’s Call, trained by the legendary Tommy Voss, died in 2010 with earnings of over $1.5 million on flat, turf, and jump races. He was a fan favorite at Saratoga.
With his attempt to become the next big fan favorite at Saratoga is Street Fashion, a four-year-old Pennsylvania-bred gelding. By Street Sense – Winter Fashion (FR), by Kendor (FR), Street Fashion was bred by George Strawbridge, Jr. and is owned by Strawbridge’s Augustin Stable. Ridden by Joel Rosario, for trainer H. Graham Motion, Street Fashion has earnings over $100,000 and is multiple-stakes placed and has finished in the money in nine of 13 career starts. One has to wonder if he will still be racing, and winning, at nine years old.
