From the Spa: September 4 Midlantic-breds in Saratoga stakes
“From the Spa,” written by our on-site correspondent Joe Aiello, III, returns to keep you up-to-date on horses bred in the mid-Atlantic racing in Saratoga stakes.
Sunday September 4th feature race at Saratoga is the Prioress Stakes, a Grade 2 six-furlong sprint for three-year-old fillies. The Prioress is named for the first American Thoroughbred horse to ever win a race in England. The race originated at the predecessor to what is currently Belmont Park, but has been moved to Saratoga since 1986.
Our Mid-Atlantic entry for one of the final stakes races at Saratoga for 2016 is a Pennsylvania bred named Lucy N Ethel. Undefeated in three lifetime starts, this gal with a late April 2013 birthday has not raced since January 2, when she won the Grade 3 Old Hat Stakes at Gulfstream Park. Originally trained by Ramon Preciado, she is now trained at Parx Racing by Chloe Bradley. Lucy N Ethel ( undoubtedly named after a famous TV comedy pairing of the 1960s) is owned and bred by the same organizations, J A G Racing and Jettany Thoroughbred Corp. Lucy will be jockeyed by Jose Lezcano, and her graded stakes win earlier this year at Gulfstream makes her a major player. She will carry 120 lbs.
