Hill ‘N’ Dale Equine and J. Quenneville’s Made Me Shiver moved for the lead turning for home and comfortably held off the late charge of Easy Money to take the $100,000 Sorority Stakes at Monmouth Park on Labor Day Monday.
A Steve Asmussen-trainee, Made Me Shiver gave her Hall of Fame conditioner a sweep in Monmouth’s top 2-year-old races, with stablemate Tip Tap Tapizar taking the Sapling Stakes on Sunday.
Made Me Shiver sat just off the early pace of Midnight Union, before drawing clear of the foe at the 3/16ths pole and reporting home just better than a length winner. Make Me Shiver paid $3.60, $2.80 and $2.20 as the odds-on choice in the field of eight fillies. Easy Money rallied to complete the $27.40 exacta and returned $5.60 and $4.40. It was 2 ¼ lengths further back to an oncoming Star Super, who paid $2.80 to show.
“With babies, you always have to play the break first,” said winning rider Antonio Gallardo. “Steve [trainer Asmussen] never gave me any instructions. He said to just play it by the break. Once the gates opened, we had the perfect trip. I put her in the clear on the outside and just sat behind the speed. She was very comfortable and at the quarter pole I asked her to run and she took off.”
A daughter of freshman sire Maclean’s Music from the Tiznow mare Tiz News, the Ontario-bred Made Me Shiver has now won two of her three starts with earnings of $90,960.
Live racing continues at Monmouth Park on Saturday, Sept. 10 – gates open 11:30 a.m., first post 12:50 p.m. The track will host live cards on Saturdays and Sundays through Sept. 25 after which Thoroughbred racing shifts north to the Meadowlands for 14 all-turf cards beginning Sept. 28.
