Delaware Park horses to watch: September 4
by Frank Vespe
There’s a nine-race holiday card at Delaware Park Labor Day afternoon, all for Thoroughbreds. Post time is 1:15 p.m. Some horses to watch:
- The fifth is a maiden special weight test for fillies and mares three and up going six furlongs on the main track. The 3-2 favorite is the Larry Jones-trained Americana (3-2). The bad news — and what makes her hard to endorse in the win spot — is that the daughter of Tapit has lost 10 times in her career to date with three of those, including her last, as the favorite. She just missed last out, run down by Infuse in the last jumps. The horse we’re intrigued by is a debut runner from the Mike Trombetta barn, Zingalong (8-1). The Uncle Mo filly was surprisingly inexpensive when purchased as a yearling, given that she’s by one of the sport’s hot sires, and that gives you pause. The work tab appears to indicate that she’s relatively new to the Trombetta operation, since she was training at Penn National until early last month. Her works are good enough, though, and although Trombetta doesn’t have a great record with debut runners — 10 percent — he did win with one the other day at Timonium Friday, and when he does score, it’s often at a price; he has a positive ROI. Angel Rodriguez will ride.
- In the eighth, a 1 1/8 mile allowance test over soft turf, the horse we’re zooming in on is Folk Magic (7-2) from the Arnaud Delacour barn. The daughter of Americain won at first asking at Woodbine last year and has not won in four subsequent starts in the barn of trainer Brian Lynch. But note some of the horses she’s been chasing; they include stakes winner Lipstick City and the stakes-placed Chubby Star. She shifts into the Delacour barn here and will have Daniel Centeno up.
