Claimbox: Claiming activity trailing 2017 levels

Through two months, mid-Atlantic claiming activity continues to lag behind the numbers recorded in 2017, according to an analysis of Equibase statistics. That came following a February in which claiming activity was essentially flat versus 2017.
Through the end of February 2018, 317 horses have been claimed in the mid-Atlantic region. The combined value of those horses is $3,248,250, good for an average of $10,246. The number of horses claimed was off 4.5 percent from the 332 taken via the claimbox through two months of 2017; the value was actually up by about one percent, with the average having risen from under $9,700.
Trainer Jamie Ness leads all conditioners in claiming activity. He has claimed 15 horses to date with a total combined value of $173,500 (average value: $11,567). That gave him a one-claim lead over Kieron Magee, who led all trainers in 2017 claims and has grabbed 14 horses to date.
The rest of the top five includes Patricia Farro and Joseph Taylor, with 11 claims each, and Claudio Gonzalez, with 10. The claims made by Gonzalez are worth a combined $169,000, the second-highest total of any trainer and the second-highest average of any trainer in the top 10 by number of claims. In that regard, his $16,900 average trails only Gerry Brooks, whose six claims have averaged $17,000 each.
Parx Racing saw over 90 horses claimed in February and leads the region to date with 152 claims through the end of February. The total value of those claims, a shade less than $1.5 million, is also the region’s highest. The average claim value of about $9,600 is second-highest in the region.
At Laurel Park, horsemen have claimed 114 horses to date, with a combined value of $1,379,000. Both those figures are second in the region, trailing only Parx. The average value of claims at Laurel is almost $12,100, easily higher than any other track in the region.
Both Penn National and Charles Town have lost numerous days of live racing to the fickle weather that has bedeviled the mid-Atlantic region thus far in 2018, and their numbers reflect that. Penn National has had 34 horses claimed thus far (total value: $299,500), while Charles Town has had just 17 ($111,250).
