Claimbox: Claiming activity through March lags 2017

After a March in which 191 horses were claimed in the Mid-Atlantic, the region’s claiming activity continues to lag behind the same period in 2017.
Through March 31, 2018, the region has seen 508 horses claimed with a total value of $5.092 million. The average value of those claims is about $10,024. As a result, the number of horses claimed is off nearly five percent versus 2017, when 534 horses had changed hands via the claimbox; and the gross value of those claims also is down, by just under one percent. The average claim has risen by 8.3 percent from last year’s figure of $9,253.
Trainer Kieron Magee, who led all trainers last year in claiming activity, has a narrow edge in that category again this year to date. Magee has grabbed 21 horses at mid-Atlantic tracks thus far, one more than Jamie Ness. Ness, however, leads in the gross value of claims, his 20 worth a combined $241,000, good for an average of $12,050.
Among trainers that have claimed at least 10 horses — there are 10 — it’s Claudio Gonzalez, fifth in the number of claims, who has been claiming at the highest end. Gonzalez has made 12 claims to date, and they have averaged $15,916, good for a total of $191,000.
Others among the top five by number of claims are Patricia Farro, with 17, and Scott Lake with 15. Trainers in the top 10 by number of claims have accounted for 141 claims to date, nearly 28 percent of the regionwide total. Overall, 178 trainers have claimed at least one horse thus far in 2018, versus 198 who have lost at least one.
Parx Racing was the second busiest track in the region in February, with 72 horses claimed — two behind Laurel Park — but remains the year-to-date leader. The Bensalem oval has seen 224 horses claimed to date with a total combined value in excess of $2.1 million.
Laurel is second by claiming activity, with 188 horses having changed hands via the claimbox. However, it has the highest gross volume of those claims — more than $2.2 million — and its average of over $11,700 is also easily the highest in the region.
Claiming activity has risen about 18 percent at Laurel thus far in 2018 versus last year, while at Parx it’s close to even.
That’s not the case at either Penn National or Charles Town, both of which have seen fairly significant drops in activity. Penn National had seen 91 horses claimed to this point last year, but thus far this year, just 65 have been. The value of those claims is $560,500 (average: $8,623).
And Charles Town has seen the number of claims plummet from 56 to this point in 2017 to just 31 thus far this year. Those 31 horses have been worth a combined total of $208,750, good for an average of $6,734. Both those figures also are well behind 2017 numbers.
Our Claimbox report covers claiming activity taking place at Laurel, Pimlico, and Timonium in Maryland; Charles Town Races in West Virginia; Delaware Park; Penn National and Parx Racing in Pennsylvania; and Monmouth Park and The Meadowlands in New Jersey. Of those, just Laurel, Charles Town, Penn National, and Parx were active in March.
