Thus far in the young Laurel Park spring/summer meet, veteran jockey Edgar Prado has been making the most of limited mounts. As a result, he tops our first alternative jockey ratings of the meet. With 283.35 points, Prado sits well ahead of Steve Hamilton (232.82), Feargal Lynch (217.87), Weston Hamilton (208.79), and J.D. Acosta (207.13), who complete the top five.
Our ranking system incorporates wins, win percentage, earnings per start, and wagering return on investment. The leading rider in each category receives a score of 100 per category, with other jockeys obtaining a percentage of that. That means that a leader in all four categories would receive a score of 400 total.
This rating system is designed to highlight individuals who win frequently, and score in major races. Our stats have been applied to each jockey at Laurel Park who has made at least 10 starts during the meet and won at least once.
Weston Hamilton leads all riders with nine trips to the winner’s circle, two wins ahead of Lynch, who has seven. There is a five-way tie for third, among Acosta, Horacio Karamanos, Jorge Vargas Jr., Daniel Centeno, and Sheldon Russell, who each have six wins to their name.
Prado’s win percentage of 36.36 percent gives him a strong advantage over his fellow riders at Laurel Park. Steve Hamilton is next, with a strike rate of 22.73 percent. Acosta comes in next, with a win percentage of 20.69 percent. Lynch and Forest Boyce complete the top five, with win percentages of 19.44 and 17.65, respectively.
Prado also leads the colony in terms of earnings per start, collecting an average of $8,739 per outing. Hamilton moves into second with earnings per start of $7,298. Completing the top five are Karamanos ($6,329), Julian Pimentel ($5,965), Lynch ($5,863), and Centeno ($5,551).
Tais Lyapustina has the early strong lead in terms of wagering ROI. Her lone win at the meet was the 60-1 Derecho, resulting in a $2 ROI of $7.68. Jorge Ruiz jumps in at number two, returning an average ROI of $3.76 to his backers. In third sits Prado, with an average ROI of $2.98. Once again, Steve Hamilton is not far behind Prado, and sits in fourth with an ROI of $2.40. Rounding out the top five is Jevian Toledo, with an ROI of $1.86.
