After DQ, Monomoy Girl drops a spot in NTRA Top Thoroughbred Poll

Reigning Eclipse Award Champion Abel Tasman moved from fifth to fourth position in this week’s NTRA Top 10 Thoroughbred Poll, supplanting 3-year-old filly sensation Monomoy Girl, who finished first in Saturday’s $1 million Cotillion Stakes at PARX only to be disqualified and placed second. Both Monomoy Girl, who is ranked fifth in this week’s poll, and Abel Tasman are expected to square off in the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Longines Distaff on November 3 at Churchill Downs. McKinzie, sidelined since late March, vaulted into 11th position after winning Saturday’s $1 million Pennsylvania Derby.
Accelerate, who is expected to make his final start before the Breeders’ Cup Classic in Saturday’s Awesome Again Stakes at Santa Anita Park, retained the top position in this week’s NTRA poll for the sixth consecutive week. Triple Crown Champion Justify was second in the poll, followed by Diversify, who is pointing for Saturday’s Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park.
The only other change in this week’s Top 10 Poll involved Catalina Cruiser (eighth) and Sistercharlie (ninth), who flipped-flopped positions from last week.
The NTRA Top Thoroughbred Poll is the sport’s most comprehensive survey of experts. Every week eligible journalists and broadcasters cast votes for their top 10 horses, with points awarded on a 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 basis. All horses that have raced in the U.S., are in training in the U.S., or are known to be pointing to a major event in the U.S. are eligible for the NTRA Top Thoroughbred Poll, which continues until November 5, after the Breeders’ Cup World Championships.
