The COVID-19 pandemic has had substantial impacts on everyday life across the country. How it will affect the upcoming Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-year-olds in training sale remains to be seen — the sale takes place Monday and Tuesday in Timonium — but it does not seem to have scared off many folks who want to sell horses.

Because of the pandemic, the sale was delayed from its original mid-May date. It’s also taking place with a variety of safety restrictions being imposed, including capacity restrictions.

And come to think of it, perhaps it is scaring away some sales participants. While there were 559 numbered hips prior to outs, there are 142 outs, driving the sale down towards 400 horses. Last year, 425 horses went through the ring.

In any case, here’s the sale by the numbers (including some numbers you didn’t realize you were curious about). All the data below is prior to outs:

HORSES BY MONTH BORN

January is a pretty lonely month. April, on the other hand, isn’t fooling. (See what we did there?!?)

HORSES BY STATE BRED

There will Kentucky-breds aplenty on offer next week, and no shortage of New York-breds, either. If you’re looking for horses bred a little closer to home, Maryland (45) and Pennsylvania (34) are your best options. Six states contributed one horse each to the sale.

There are plenty of high-end sires represented at the sale, among them 2015 Triple Crown winner American Pharoah, Into Mischief, and others. Below, all the sires with at least 10 hips on offer prior to outs:

AND DON’T FORGET ABOUT SEX AND COLOR

Maybe your method of buying horses focuses less on pesky details like who the sire is or where the horse was bred and more on the important stuff, like what color the horse was. We’ve got your answers.

But don’t try to buy a gray gelding, because there aren’t any. In fact, there are just three geldings on offer at the sale. There are, however, 279 colts and 277 fillies, so you might be better served heading in that direction.

As for colors, while the sale two years back offered the excitement of a white horse, no such luck in 2020. All of the horses offered are one of the four conventional colors, from bay (232 hips) to gray or roan (61). Dark bay or brown is represented with 151 horses, while there are 115 chestnuts.

Breezes continue Thursday and Friday in Timonium, with the sale kicking off at 11:00 a.m. Monday.
