Meanwhile, there was some shuffling on the trainer side, as John McKee won with four of 11 starters at Charles Town, including stakes wins with Bridging the Gap and Theladyistrue, to grab first place with 5.026 points. Chad Brown, 12-for-36 at Monmouth Park, is second with 4.545 points.

The ranks are compiled by comparing the performance of each trainer or jockey in three metrics – win percentage, earnings per start, and $2 wagering return on investment – to the average of the jockeys or trainers at that track.

The formula also includes a component designed to reduce scores for trainers and jockeys who have raced significantly less frequently than average in the region in order to give more credence to larger sample sizes.

The average ranking score for all trainers is 2.447  points; for jockeys, it’s 2.603. In all, 255 trainers qualified for inclusion, as did 144 jockeys.

The rankings incorporate every rider and trainer at each track at which he or she had made at least 12 starts and won at least one race.

The list includes racing action from May 15 through September 20. It includes racing from Laurel Park, Delaware Park, Monmouth Park, Parx Racing, Penn National, and Charles Town. Colonial Downs data is incorporated for jockeys only.

TOP MIDLANTIC JOCKEY STANDINGS

Bravo, Gonzalez, and Charles Town-based Arnaldo Bocachica (4.406 points) remain one-two-three in the Jockey rankings, while Trevor McCarthy, 10^th a week ago, made a big jump to fourth with 4.146 points.

McCarthy won with five of 15 starters at Laurel Park during the racing week, including three of five on September 19, to make the move. Joining him in the upwardly mobile category was Paco Lopez, who jumped from 11^th a week ago to fifth this week after winning with four of 16 starters at Monmouth and finishing in the money six other times. He has 4.095 points.

The jump by Lopez – the only newcomer to the top 10 – pushed Mychel Sanchez down to 11^th. Sanchez, who won with three of 22 starters at Parx Racing, has 3.855 points and is just behind 10^th-place Delaware Park-based Roberto Alvarado, Jr.

With the shuffling, every operating track in the region is represented among the top 10 jockeys.

TOP MIDLANTIC TRAINER STANDINGS

On the trainer side, each of the top seven in the rankings was among the top eight last week, but at the bottom of the top group are three newcomers: Anthony Farrior, Brandon Kulp, and Kelly Breen.

They replace James Casey, Mark Reid, and Bernie Houghton. Casey went 0-for-7 during the racing week to drop to 19^th place overall, while Reid is in 15^th after an 0-of-3 ledger and Houghton (1-for-8 at Penn National) is in 11^th.

Farrior moved up from 11^th to 8^th with 3.973 points. He has 30 wins from 104 starters at Charles Town and Laurel. Kulp won with three of eight starters at his Penn National base to move from 12^th to ninth with 3.954 points. And Breen won with three of 12 starters to improve his point total to 3.894, good for 10^th overall.

Five of six operating tracks are represented in the top 10 with trainers doing the bulk of their work. While two of the top 10 — Farrior and Jorge Duarte, Jr. — have sufficient Laurel Park starts to qualify there, the highest rated trainer primarily racing there is Cal Lynch, who’s 12^th with 3.823 points.
