LAUREL PARK CANCELS SATURDAY CARD
With ice and freezing rain hitting central Maryland — and expected to continue for several hours — the Maryland Jockey Club decided at noon to cancel its Saturday card.
The nine-race card will be transferred in its entirety to next Saturday, February 20.
- Maryland Racing Commission OKs new TMJC as track operatorThe Maryland Racing Commission on Dec. 23 signed off on the new nonprofit Maryland Jockey Club to operate Laurel Park in the new year.
The card slated to be the biggest of the winter meet will now take place next Saturday. It includes the only two graded events of the winter in Maryland, the Grade 3 Barbara Fritchie and Grade 3 General George.
It also includes four additional stakes. Perhaps most prominent among them is the $100,000 Miracle Wood, contested at one mile. The three-year-old fixture begins the sequence of local races that culminates in the Grade 1 Preakness Stakes. The Miracle Wood is followed in March by the Private Terms, and April brings the Federico Tesio Stakes.
