Race 8 | 6-7-9-11 | Intriguing two-year-old maiden event on tap, and it’s a pretty wide-open heat. The horse we’re most interested in is #6 Mr Sandman (7-2). The Uncle Lino colt showed good speed on debut, leading the First State Dash at Delaware Park early, and stuck with it until the later stages of the race before throwing in the towel. While the quality of Del-certified races – like all state-bred races – can be a bit in and out, the top pair in this one appear to be legitimate runners. This guy is bred to be a runner: he’s by promising young sire Uncle Lino (ranked 20th second-crop sire in the nation) and out of the Forestry mare Avani Force, who’s also the dam of multiple graded stakes winner Call Paul and stakes winner Pink Caddy… This is no easy spot, though. Two others with experience and big shots are #7 Don Giuseppe (5-1), second against similar on debut, and #9 That’s Right (4-1), who just missed last out in his second start at Monmouth… And then there’s a first-timer in #11 Cuneo (5-1). His sire, Peace and Justice, had three winners yesterday, including good-looking local debut winner Be Water… |
Race 9 | 5-4-1-3 | The one to watch in this starter allowance (though one we’re trying to beat on top) is #4 Fox Red (2-1). You kinda have to wonder if the clunker he threw last out means he’s finally gotten discouraged. The six-year-old Mineshaft gelding has been claimed six times since last November while continually ascending the class ladder though he’s won only once during the period. He was claimed twice for $12,500, then for $16,000, followed by claims at the $25,000, $32,000, and $40,000 levels. All the while, he continued to run well against ever tougher company before running up the track last out as the 9-5 favorite. The drop from $40,000 to this starter allowance is an appropriate one; the question is whether it’s soon enough to get this veteran back on track…. We’ll try to beat him with #5 Geebert (6-1), who won at this level three back… |
