The Fasig-Tipton Midlantic two-year-olds in training saw 375 horses change hands at a gross cost of nearly $34.8 million.

How’d the Midlantic-breds do?

In all 47 of the 375 that sold were bred in the Mid-Atlantic, with Maryland (21) and Pennsylvania (22) nearly sharing top honors. Two of the hips that sold were bred in West Virginia, and two others were bred in Virginia.

The Maryland-breds led by gross sales amount, with those 21 hips fetching a grand total of more than $1.3 million. The two Virginia-breds to sell averaged $195,000, the top average among the Midlantic states.

  • The top Maryland-bred was Hip 284, a chestnut Maclean’s Music colt out of the Yes It’s True mare Martini. A half-brother to stakes winner Dirty, the colt worked a furlong in 10 1/5 seconds. He was consigned by Hartley/De Renzo Thoroughbreds and purchased by Legion Bloodstock. Purchase price: $450,000
  • Hip 264 was the top Virginia-bred. A bay colt by Speightstown, he worked an eighth in 10 1/5 seconds and is out of the Include mare Looking Great. Consigned by James Layden as agent, he was purchased by KSI. Purchase price: $265,000
  • The top West Virginia-bred to sell was Hip 85. A dark bay or brown Mo Town filly, she is out of the winning Exclusive Quality mare Can’t Steal My Joy and worked an eighth in 10 2/5 seconds. Woodford Thoroughbreds, agent, was the consignor, and Baccari Bloodstock as agent for D. W. F. Inc. signed the ticket. Purchase price: $120,000
  • The top Pennsyvlania-bred to sell wasted no time making his presence known; he was Hip 2. By The Factor, the colt is out of the Yes It’s True mare You Betcha Babe and galloped rather than breezing. He was consigned by Crane Thoroughbred Services as agent and purchased by Two Pals Racing. Purchase price: $100,000

While horses may breeze or gallop at the sale, all but five of the 375 that sold breezed, with the strong majority of those breezing one furlong. Sales prices closely tracked breeze times, as the six to breeze in 10 seconds flat averaged more than $490,000 – more than double the $221,000+ averaged by those that went in 10 1/5.

At the other end of the spectrum, horses that took more than 11 seconds to compLete a furlong averaged less than $15,000.
