Delaware Park picks and analysis: June 1, 2023

Live racing at Delaware Park kicks off May 24 and runs through late October.

Once again this year, we will have Delaware Park picks and analysis for every day of live racing at the venerable track.

Today’s card features eight races.

Race #1 Picks: 5-4-1-7

In this $25,000 maiden claiming race at 6 furlongs, #5 Holla At Your Boy (9-5) showed some early speed n a route on the turf at Belmont. Now turning back and moving to dirt and to a lower level. Given the lack of proven contenders in this race, we have him on top. We have first-time starter #4 Ray’s Gone Astray (8-1) in the place position. Trainer Robert Smith usually has his first-time starters ready to run. He has been working well and due to the lack of other speed in this event we will give him the nod. #1 Tuna N Stamps (5-2) was running well in Tampa last year and fits well with this group.

Race #2 Picks: 5-10-8-4

In this $6250 claiming race for N2L at six furlongs, #5 Edmund Fitzgerald (5-1) is coming from Tampa where he has shown early speed in some of his races. If he can match his last, he has a good chance against this weak field. #10 The Colora Kid (7-2) had some early foot in his last race at one mile. Now turning back to six furlongs where he may be able to hold a lead at the shorter distance. #8 Seeing Red (9-5) ran evenly against better in his last race at Pimlico. He should improve on his second time back.

Race #3 Picks: 7-8-1-6

In this $40,000 claiming race at six furlongs, #7 Indybound (6-1) put in a game effort at this level back in April. He then faltered against better two weeks ago. This will be his third try for Jamie Ness, and this looks like a very good spot. #8 Alpha Whiskey (2-1) has been in very good form at Oaklawn this year. Making second start for Greg Compton after the claim and his speed figures look very solid. #1 Noble Fish (3-1) has two strong races with very solid speed figures. He will be competing with Alpha Whiskey for the early lead and has a shot if he can get free.

Race #4 Picks: 11-7-2-4

In this $16,000 maiden claiming race at 1 1/16 miles on the turf, #11 El Buffalo (15-1) ran evenly at this level on the turf in January. Then he threw in a dud on the dirt, but is now returning to the grass. We look for this three-year-old to improve and we have him on top today. #7 Fazzani (4-1) was pulled up back in April. It must not have been anything too serious, because he’s back very soon. He’s taking a class drop and should be in the mix against this less talented field. #2 My Boy Colton (6-1) has been holding his own on the dirt at Parx. Maybe the surface switch will wake him up.

Race #5 Picks: 3-7-5-6

In this $6250 starter allowance for fillies and mares at one mile 70 yards, #3 Tiz Herself (7-5) has won four in a row and should continue that streak today.  This mare is always game, and she should be able to handle this group. #7 Cartwheel (5-2) has won two of her last three, and her speed figures say she is well placed here. Parx shippers often do well at Delaware.  #5 Woods Hole (4-1) ran well in last on the turf, but still has to prove she can run a route on the dirt.

Joe’s Notes

  • Tough day for favorites; of 5 who were odds-on faves, only 1 winner
  • No time appears to have been recorded for the 5th race on the turf
  • Additionally, no final time was recorded for the 2nd race, though internal fractions were

Race #6 Picks: 7-9-5-12

In this $28,000 claiming race for fillies and mares one mile and 70 yards on the turf, #7 Amunet (6-1) ran well at Gulfstream in a route turf race. She has not run since March, but her workout line looks good and we think she will be fit and ready to run today. #9 High Vibes (10-1) had a good turf route race in March at Tampa and although she only has one win in seventeen tries, she is usually game and will be in the mix today. #5 Chalcolithic (20-1) has run some good turf route races and could pull off a shocker today.

Race #7 Picks:  3-6-4-1

In this $39,000 second level allowance race for 3YO fillies at six furlongs, #3 Happy Clouds (8-1) has been on a roll this year with three wins and three seconds in six starts. She will be running fresh after a six-week break, and this looks like a great spot. #6 Ms. Bucchero (4-1) is an improving three-year-old who won her last race convincingly at Parx. There appears to be a lot of upside for this filly and we think she’ll be competitive today.  #4 Chickieness (8-5) has been competitive in a series of listed stakes races, but her speed figures are not impressive. She is a definite contender, but we prefer some others.

Race #8 Picks: 2-7-8-4

In this $12,500 claiming race at six furlongs, #2 Glory Song (2-1) is unpredictable, but he is not facing any monsters here, and if he performs up to his potential, he should handle this field. He has won his only lifetime start at Delaware.  #7 The Sicarii (3-1) was beaten by Glory Song earlier this year but has run a good race at Belmont since then. He can win this race if he repeats that effort. #8 Money Song (4-1) has won two straight and is coming out of a key race where both the place and show finishers went on to win their next race. He should get a piece of the pie.
