ANALYSIS

Top choice #5 Now Hook’em (9-2) had a useful enough return to action after eight months on the sidelines. He showed a new dimension in that last, finding himself off the early pace before rallying a little bit into fourth. It was the first time he didn’t back up after not making the early lead. Now in his second off the bench, the lightly-raced Tim Grams trainee can take a step forward… The speedy #4 El Lucerito (3-1) didn’t make the lead last out in the Coin Collector, the first time in his five career outings he didn’t have a “1” next to his name after the first call. He backed up readily thereafter, and while he may be speediest of the lot today, he may have a hard time holding some others in here… A runner who will look for a stalk-and-pounce trip is the favorite, #3 Lord of Cork (5-2). He’s been in pretty good form of late, and even that fourth-place finish in the Coin Collector came against a plus group… #2 Castle Toy (12-1) has speed and, breaking from the rail, not much choice other than to go. He may be hard-pressed to stick around, though, as El Lucerito looks speedier…

We’re going to give #5 Xanthe (7-2) another crack in this allowance contest. The Moschonas trainee was the beaten favorite in last in a completely indifferent performance in which she never was involved. Prior, her two-turn races all were at least respectable, with several that were good. Let’s chalk that up to “one of those things” and give her a shot to make amends tonight… There’s not much speed in this one, but what there is may come from #7 Lucky Blonde (3-1). She was a good second last out against the talented Chromatic Lass — the same race in which Xanthe was beaten fave — and enters with three straight solid efforts… If Lucky Blonde doesn’t provide the early lick, that may fall to morning line favorite Tiz a Country Girl (5-2). The Todd Beattie trainee has done pretty much nothing but run good races going two turns, but though Beattie has a good record in similar circumstances, this one’s about-to-end eight-month break does give us a bit of pause… #8 Juba Baby (6-1) ran big last out…
