MID-ATLANTIC THREE STARS: june 5
Plenty of racing action took place throughout the Mid-Atlantic this past week.
Here’s a look at the “three stars” of each track:
Region’s Best
FIRST STAR: BOPPY O. With a strong late rally, Bobby O pulled the upset in Saturday’s Jersey Derby at Monmouth Park. He rated towards the back of the pack early on, then made a rush to the lead on the final turn and began charging down the center of the track late in the one-mile grass contest. Odds-on favorite Talk of the Nation got the jump on him, but thanks to a vigorous ride from Isaac Castillo, the 9-1 shot got up late to win by a length. He covered the distance in 1:34.02. This his second stakes win, following the With Anticipation Stakes at Saratoga last year, and his fourth stakes placing of the season. He’s owned by John Oxley and Breeze Easy LLC and trained by Mark Casse.
SECOND STAR: BEACH DAZE. One day later, Jersey-bred fillies and mares took center stage in the Smart N Classy Handicap going a mile on dirt. After four straight runner-up efforts, Beach Daze broke through to win this one with a deft move between horses. She raced off the rail most of the way and contested the pace, and had enough left late to fight on for the win. Bred by Lenny Rera & Beth Rera, this 4-year-old mare is owned by All In Racing Stables LLC and J P S Stable, trained by Farrel Mann, and was ridden by Adam Bowman.
THIRD STAR: GREAT SPIRIT. Third time in stakes company was the charm for Great Spirit. After losing her first two outings against stakes foes, she found her way to the winner’s circle on Saturday at Charles Town with a win in the Fancy Buckles Stakes. She broke well and opened up a clear early lead under Jose Montano and from there kept on going. The half-sister to Dr. Feelgood won by 1 3/4 lengths and ran 4 1/2 furlongs in 51.48 seconds. She’s a homebred for Jill Daniel trained by Ollie Figgins.
