Top Midlantic-bred Poll: How’d they fare?
Midlantic-breds made their presence known during Saturday’s Belmont Stakes festival at Belmont Park. And one of them earned a major victory.
Voting for the newest Mid-Atlantic Thoroughbred/The Racing Biz Top Midlandtic-bred Poll was conducted last week, prior to Belmont day, though it’s sure to be shuffled by the day’s results.
Caravel, rated number two among older horses by the poll’s participants, will almost surely take the top spot in the next poll after her strong victory in Saturday’s Grade 1 Jaipur. Racing against males, Caravel, with Tyler Gaffalione in the irons, won by nearly a length while getting six furlongs on firm turf in a sharp 1:07.93.
The Pennsylvania-bred Caravel is three-for-three this year and has won five straight overall. That streak includes an upset win in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint, which led to her being named Top Midlantic-bred of 2022.
Caravel was one of two among the five top older horses to run on the Belmont undercard. Also racing was the Virginia-bred Repo Rocks, who was the leader among older horses in the latest poll. He, however, could do no better than seventh in the Grade 1 Metropolitan Handicap after finding some traffic early in the race.
Among three-year-olds, the only weekend runner was the Pennsylvania-bred Angel of Empire. Third in the Kentucky Derby, in Saturday’s Grade 1 Belmont Stakes he finished in a dead heat for fourth, a couple of lengths behind winner Arcangelo.
While the older horse results will likely move Caravel to the top of the class, Angel of Empire’s solid Belmont outing probably will solidify his position at the head of the class.
