Delaware Park picks and analysis: June 14, 2023

Live racing at Delaware Park kicks off May 24 and runs through late October.

Once again this year, we will have Delaware Park picks and analysis for every day of live racing at the venerable track.

Today’s card features eight races, and first post is 12:30 EDT.

Race #1 Picks: 2-1-7-3

In this $6250 claiming race for fillies and mares at 5 1/2 furlongs, #2 One Pair of Hands (8-1) was running well at Parx earlier this year with this trainer and is now coming back on third race after the claim. She is dropping to a level where she can win if she gets a good start. #1 Boss Angel (3-1) is coming back from second off the layoff and is taking a class drop. Flashed some brief speed in last and should improve today. #7 Beargrease (2-1) is the lone speed and if she is ready after the eight-month layoff she could be dangerous today.

Race #2 Picks: 7-4-3-5

In this $16,000 claiming race for 2NL at one mile #7 Rushin Tothecircle (3-1) has been off since January but ran well against tough company in Kentucky before a couple of dull races on the grass in Florida. Trainer Christine Clagett is making her season debut at Delaware but does have some wins in Maryland. If this gelding is ready, he could best this group. #4 Delta Ridge (5-2) has run most of his races on the grass but has shown he can also perform well on dirt. He was competitive at this level in Tampa and should be a contender today.  #3 Sidney’s Bid (4-1) has been in decent form and could get a minor piece of the pie.

Race #3 Picks: 8-4-5-10

In this $16,000 starter allowance race at 1 1/8 miles on the turf, #8 Downtown Katie (3-1) has been closing at a mile and a sixteenth and this might translate into a strong run at a longer distance. She ran some good races on the Delaware turf last year. This mare has good connections, and we have her on top today. #4 Mosalah (20-1) didn’t have a great trip in last and ran well below her potential. Now coming back in second off a layoff and we think she will improve. #5 Inanna’s Quest (8-1) has three wins in eight tries on the Delaware grass and is in good form.

Race #4 Picks: 1-3-2-6

In this $6250 claiming race for fillies and mares at 5 1/2 furlongs, #1 Snooty (3-1) won her last start at Hawthorne and will be making her first start for Elliot Sullivan. She has five wins in twelve lifetime starts and looks very competitive with this group. #3 Daily Briefing (2-1) is making her third start for Juan Arriagad,a and she was competitive at this level in last. She should be competitive today.  #2 Insightful (6-1) has been away for almost two years and is taking a major class drop for Jamie Ness. Dangerous if she can run back to previous efforts, but that remains to be seen.

Race #5 Picks: 13-11-2-8

In this $16,000 starter allowance at 7 1/2 furlongs on the turf, #13 Speak Unity (6-1) is an also eligible and if he draws in will be a top contender today. Since moving back to the turf, he has shown he can be competitive in both routes and sprints. Seven and a half furlongs may be to his liking. He looks like he has been placed well today and we have him on top. #11 Fortune’s Fool (10-1) showed lots of early speed when facing others here in most recent race. May like the shorter distance.  #2 Wicked Finn (7-2) had enough late kick to beat several of these in most recent race. Now turning back and will need more early speed to get by them this time.

Joe’s Notes

  • Delaware missed two days last week because of air quality issues…
  • Jockey Daniel Centeno won with five of six mounts during the abbreviated racing week. No other rider won more than once…
  • Trainers enjoying success with fewer starters include longtime local stalwart Lynn Ashby (2-for-9, 6 ITM to date), Michael Stidham (3-for-7), and Antonio Machado (3-for-6)…

Race #6 Picks: 4-5-3-7

In this $50,000 optional claiming race at six furlongs, #4 Awesome Strong (7-2) is an undefeated colt that was running in restricted stakes races at Gulfstream last year. Now getting Lasix for the first time and has been working very fast. Even though he may need a race, we have him on top. #5 Borracho (5-2) has been winning at this level in Maryland and has impressive speed figures. If he matches either of his last two efforts, he will be very tough today. #3 Full Authority (8-1) has been holding his own against better at Oaklawn. His speed figures indicate he will be in the mix today.

Race #7 Picks: 3-4-9-7

In this $25,000 optional claiming race at 1 1/16 miles on the turf, #3 Scanno (9-2) was running well against better at Colonial and Woodbine. He will be lying off the pace and looking to close late. Michael Stidham wins at a 22% clip when bringing horses back from longer than a six-month layoff in 32 attempt,s and we think he will handle this group. #4 Huge Bigly (5-2) is making a return to the grass after recent dirt races. Has led in recent races but not been able to maintain his speed. He has had success on the turf in the past and the change in surface may benefit his running style. #9 Who’s Counting (7-2) won on the turf at Laurel before returning to the hurdles. He does have speed and couple be a big factor today.

Race #8 Picks: 7-1-9-4

We usually like early speed in Delaware sprints, but in this $12,500 claiming race for filles and mares at 5 1/2 furlongs, there are multiple speed horses so we are going with a horse that hangs off the pace. #7 Between Dreams (7-2) has not run since September of last year, but her running style may work well today. She has some fast works and will be looking to pass the late faders to take the top spot. #1 Let’s be Honest (4-1) struggled in her last race here at Delaware but was running well at Tampa prior. Look for her to go to the front and try to take them gate to wire. #9 Aferdita (8-1) should improve in second try at Delaware. Had some good races earlier this year.
