Jaime Rodriguez nets 2000th win
Two-time defending Delaware Park leading rider Jaime Rodriguez notched career victory 2,000 at Delaware Park Thursday. The milestone win came in the fourth race when Morris Kernan Jr., Yo Berbs & Jagger’s Strugar posted 1 ½-length triumph in a $22,000 starter allowance. The 7-year-old Kentucky-bred son of Hard Spun was trained by Jamie Ness.
Rodriguez, a 32-year-old native of Puerto Rico, notched his 1,000th winner at Mahoning Valley on February 21, 2018.
The win was his third consecutive triumph early in Thursday’s card. Rodriguez also won the second race aboard Vodkatini for trainer Michael Gorham and the third aboard the Christophe Clement-trained Rutherford.
Later in the card, Rodriguez notched his 2001st win when he piloted Rebel Empire to a win in the sixth race. The four wins gave Rodriguez the meet lead with 11, one more than Daniel Centeno. Jeremy Rose is third with seven wins.
For his career, Rodriguez has 2,001 wins from 10,594 starters with purse earnings of over $38.2 million. During his time at Delaware, he has teamed up with Ness to comprise a formidable duo. Ness is currently in a three-way tie for the training lead with five wins.
