Delaware Park picks and analysis: June 21, 2023

Live racing at Delaware Park kicks off May 24 and runs through late October.

Once again this year, we will have Delaware Park picks and analysis for every day of live racing at the venerable track.

Today’s card features eight races, and first post is 12:30 EDT. Carryovers: Late Pick 5, $5,931

Race #1 Picks: 2-5-4-3

In this optional claiming/starter allowance race for fillies and mares at one mile, #2 Tiz Herself (4-5) is the odds-on morning line favorite and deserves to be. This extremely consistent mare has won five straight with speed figures in the mid to high 70s. She has won five of six lifetime starts at Delaware Park and it would be very surprising if she does not finish on top again today. #5 Mavilus (7-2) looks like the only horse that poses a minor threat to Tiz Herself. She has been facing fairly stiff competition. She consistently has speed figures in the 70s and has won twice in six starts at Delaware. She will be closing late but may run out of ground. #4 Our Fantasy (8-1) drew off in her last race here at Delaware. Does have six lifetime wins at this distance.

Race #2 Picks: 6-1-4-5

In this $15,000 N2L claiming race at 6 furlongs, many of these horses have shown nothing since their maiden win. At least #6 Lucky Mucho Man (8-1) has run third in his last two attempts. He has only one win in eighteen tries, but if he repeats of those races, it might be good enough to beat this group. #1 Sir Smoak (5-1) has only one win but has run second in six of his sixteen lifetime races. Maybe the switch to the Delaware dirt with help his chances. #4 Silver R (4-1) likes off tracks, so if today’s track is anything other than fast, he will be one to consider.

Race #3 Picks: 6-4-8-10 (Dirt Picks: 11-3-1-14)

In this $32,000 Maiden Claiming Race at 1 1/16 miles on the turf, #6 Dizzy Kitty (8-1) is coming back from third off a layoff. He did not have enough to win a marathon in last but is now turning back to a distance he may prefer.  We like horses on third off a layoff and believe he will run a big one today, Cathal Lynch has started a little slow at Delaware but wins at a 29% clip long term here, and it’s only a matter of time until he gets hot. #4 Emotional Rescue (6-1) is taking a class drop after not being quite good enough at a higher level. If he runs back his last race, he will be right in the mix with this group. #8 Elfuegomasbrilante (7-2) was in the same marathon race as Dizzy Kitty and was one of the pacesetters before fading late. Should be right in the mix at this distance.

Race #4 Picks: 1-2-5-7

This optional claiming/starter allowance race at one mile is extremely competitive with no clear-cut favorite.  #1 Outlier (3-1) was recently claimed back by Norman Cash for $62,500 at Churchill Downs. He has been facing tougher and his speed figures indicate he is a top contender today. #2 Thomas Shelby (2-1) is one of two David Jacobson-owned and -trained horses in this race. He won his last at Laurel after struggling at Oaklawn. He has lots of early speed which is always important on the Delaware dirt.  #5 Back Ring Luck (6-1) is the other David Jacobson trainee. He has been facing tough company at Belmont and Oaklawn. He ran into trouble when he faced Outlier three back.

Race #5 Picks: 9-4-8-1 (Dirt Picks: 7-1-3-14)

In this $28,000 claiming race at 7 ½ furlongs on the turf, #9 Between the Covers (7-2) ran evenly in his first race back from a break and should improve today. He isn’t facing any stiff competition today, and any improvement over last try will make him a contender. #4 General’s Duty (3-1) is a deep closet coming from Belmont and is getting class relief. He will be charging late and could take it if the front end can’t keep up the pace. #8 Joe Brains (5-1) got off to a rough start in last but finished well. If he can bet a better break today, he should be in the mix.

Joe’s Early Pick 5

  • Race #1:  2
  • Race #2: 1-6
  • Race #3: 4-6-8-10
  • Race #4: 1-2
  • Race #5: 1-4-8-9
  • Total Bet $32 (50-cent base)

Race #6 Picks: 2-6-1-7

In this optional claiming/starter allowance race at six furlongs, #2 Paradise Valley (2-1) won by 14 lengths in his debut race but took the lead in a seven-furlong event and got caught in last. Now back at six furlongs and shipping to speed-favoring Delaware Park. We have him on top today. #6 Cloud Music (3-1) got in a speed duel and was outfinished in last.Jaime Rodriguez will most likely take him to the front end again and try to win wire-to-wire. #1 Sainthoodforbrian (7-2) does not need the lead to win and if the others get in a duel, he may be there to pick up the pieces.

Race #7 Picks: 9-10-2-1 (Dirt Picks: 3-11-6-12)

In this allowance/optional claiming race at five furlongs on the turf, #9 Speed Warning (7-2) got carried out in last and trailed the filed only to come charging up the lane to finish third. That was an impressive burst of speed, and with better racing luck we think he will finish on top today. #10 Slippin Jimmy (5-1) has won both races he raced in on the Delaware turf and fits well here. He will be laying off the pace looking to pounce late.  #2 Call Wil (6-1) has won three of six on the Delaware turf. Is coming back from a ten-month break and workouts aren’t impressive which is a concern.

Race #8 Picks: 3-8-2-9

In this $5000 claiming race at one mile and 70 yards, #3 Tiny Tin (2-1) won two races last year and is getting class relief today. He’s a very slow starter and the key for him is to not be way behind at the half pole. If he can stay close, he has a chance. #8 Cosmic Treasure (8-5) has run much better since being claimed and has the speed to get to the front. If he gets clear from the pack, he will be tough to catch. #2 Whata Guy (7-2) has been running well this year with two wins and two seconds.
