Delaware Park picks and analysis: June 24, 2023

Live racing at Delaware Park kicks off May 24 and runs through late October.

Once again this year, we will have Delaware Park picks and analysis for every day of live racing at the venerable track.

Today’s card features eight races, and first post is 12:30 EDT.

Race #1 Picks: 5-3-4-1

In this $20,000 maiden claiming Race for two-year-olds at 4 ½ furlongs, #5 A B C Ya (5-2) has a sharp five- furlong workout on May 27 at Monmouth. Trainer Claudio Gonzalez has won at a 19% clip with two-year-olds in 89 attempts. #3 Dublshotofcourage (7-2) has a race under his belt, which equates to a five-furlong workout. We think he will compete for the win today. #4 Joey Tickles (9-5) will round out the trifecta. Andrew Simoff wins at a 19% rate with two-year-olds in 26 attempts.

Race #2 Picks: 9-10-2-1

All races are off the turf. Picks are for anticipated dirt entrants.

Race #3 Picks: 3-7-4-5

In this $16,000 claiming race for filles and mares at six furlongs, #3 Fancy Warrior (5-2) ran well in dirt sprints last year before stretching out on the grass in last try. That grass race should help her endurance and we have her on top today. #7 Honeycamp (7-5) has been in good form in her last couple races. She ran second as the favorite in last. This will be her second try on the Delaware dirt, and she should improve. #4 Thunder Boss (4-1) has been knocking on the door with five second-place finishes in twelve starts. We would not be surprised if she finally gets it done today.

Race #4 Picks: 1-6-5-7

All races are off the turf. Picks are for anticipated dirt entrants.

Race #5 Picks: 5-6-4-2

In this $5000 claiming race for filles and mares at 5 ½ furlongs, #5 Muguruza (5-2) has some early foot, which will help her on the Delaware dirt. She is inconsistent, as most bottom level claimers are, but if she has a good day, she should win this race. #6 Daily Briefing (8-1) has run second twice in a row and will again get the weight advantage. She should be able to compete with this group successfully. #4 All American Jewel (7-2) is another runner with some early speed. She has nine wins in 57 lifetime attempts.

Joe’s Notes

  • Friday’s nightcap was canceled because of the weather
  • Off the turf again for Saturday
  • Jockey Raul Mena won two on Friday, one for trainer Greg Compton, who also won two

Race #6 Picks: 10-8-6-2

All races are off the turf. Picks are for anticipated dirt entrants.

Race #7 Picks: 6-4-2-1

In this $50,000 allowance/optional claiming race for filles and mares at 5 ½ furlongs, #6 Chickieness (6-1) will be in for a tag for the first time. This filly has a lot of early speed and will be one of the early leaders. This will be Ruben Silvera’s first time aboard. She is a top contender today. #4 Shiny Slam (5-2) won a similar race in May at Monmouth with a 62 speed figure. Trainer Juan Avila brought this filly’s regular rider with her, which is a very good sign. #2 Greatitude (9-5) will be making her first start for Brittany Russell after running some competitive races in Florida.

Race #8 Picks: 6-8-9-4

All races are off the turf. Picks are for anticipated dirt entrants.
