Delaware Park picks and analysis: July 6, 2023

Live racing at Delaware Park kicks off May 24 and runs through late October.

Once again this year, we will have Delaware Park picks and analysis for every day of live racing at the venerable track. Today’s card features eight races, and first post is 12:30 EDT.

Race #1 Picks: 1-3-2-4

In this $10,000 N2L race for fillies and mares at one mile and 70 yards, #1 Qia (9-2) was running in allowance company at Mahoning Valley before trying the turf. Now shipping to Delaware and back to dirt. This filly has a slight class advantage and should be a top contender. #3 Voodoo Mama Juju (5-2) tried stakes company before dropping to a $25,000 claiming race. Now coming to Delaware and dropping again. She has not been impressive since her maiden win, but she is in a decent spot today. #2 Grand Arrow (7-2) left the maiden ranks last time out with a 50-speed rating.  If she can match that effort she will contend for a spot in the trifecta.

Race #2 Picks: 5-6-4-2

In this $5000 claiming race at one mile, #5 Instigated (3-1) was game in his first race here after coming from Charles Town. Now moving back to a route after running in sprints. He has won at this distance before and has had some success at Delaware Park with 3 wins in 16 starts. He is a contender.  #6 Whata Guy (7-2) already has two wins this year and has been knocking on the door since coming to Delaware running second in his last two races. He is a top contender. #4 Creative Cloud (6-1) is taking a class drop after two poor performances here at Delaware. He should improve today.

Race #3 Picks: 1-11-3-9

All races are off the turf. Picks are for projected main-track starters.

Race #4 Picks: 6-4-3-2

In this $28,000 N2L claiming race for filles and mares at one mile, #6 Social Lady (9-5) is climbing down the claiming ladder. Her two most recent races were very good with speed figures in the 60s. If she runs back either of her last two, it might be too much for this field to handle. #4 Ritabook (7-2) ran well in a race taken off the turf in her last at this distance. This filly has early speed and may lead from the gate to the finish line. She will be dangerous if she can get loose on the lead. #3 Indy Again (5-2) is coming up from Kentucky with Jamie Ness assuming training duties. This closer will be passing horses late and could make an impact.

Race #5 Picks: 1-2-7-11

All races are off the turf. Picks are for projected main-track starters.

Joe’s Notes

  • Off the turf Thursday and Friday…
  • Two wins for jockey Carol Cedeno on Thursday. She is third with 12 wins at the meet, four behind leader Jaime Rodriguez, who won once…

Race #6 Picks: 4-3-8-5

In this optional claiming/starter allowance race at one mile #4 Nolo Contesto (3-1) went off as the solid favorite in a first-level allowance race at Penn National in last and ran second. Now stretching out to a mile, which seems to be his preferred distance. We think he will handle this field. #3 Golden Gulley (8-1) has been dull in last two but prior to that he had some fast races and was very consistent. We look for him to return to that form and run well today.   #8 Silent Malice (4-1) has been away for a year and if he can return to his previous form, he would be a top contender today. However, his workouts aren’t spectacular, and we need to see a race to be convinced.

Race #7 Picks: 10-7-3-1

All races are off the turf. Picks are for projected main-track starters.

Race #8 Picks: 5-4-6-3

In this optional claiming/starter allowance race for fillies and mares at 5 1/2 furlongs, there is so much early speed  that we are going to think a little outside the box and pick a horse that does not need to lead to win. #5 Awesome View (6-1) has shown that she can be off the pace and still win. We think the front might weaken late in this race and she might be there to pick up the pieces.  #4 Proper Attire (7-2) has been very consistent in Maryland with two wins and a place in five starts this year. She likes to run near the front, but that might not help her today if she gets caught up in a duel. #6 R Averie Lynn (5-2) has seven wins and three place finishes in ten starts at Delaware, and we can call her a true horse for the course. She is going to have some company up front today, though, and it won’t be easy for her to lead throughout.
