From the Spa: July 14 Midlantic-breds in Saratoga stakes
by Joseph Aiello
“From the Spa” returns to keep you up-to-date on horses bred in the mid-Atlantic racing in Saratoga stakes
Today’s racing at The Spa features two ungraded stakes in the Wilton and Coronation Cup. After yesterday’s upset in the Schuylerville which saw a first time starter beat Midlantic entry Carmelina among others, maybe this card will bring better luck for our stakes entries. The Coronation Cup is the ninth race on the card for three year old fillies run at five and a half furlongs on the turf. Bosserati, a Maryland bred by Holy Boss – Candy Striper, by Twirling Candy, breaks from the eight post in the Coronation Cup at morning line odds of 8/1. Coming off three strong performances in a row, Bosserati could be in prime position to be the first Midlantic bred stakes winner at Saratoga this summer.
After failing to find her footing last year at Laurel Park after breaking maiden at Timonium on the dirt, Bosserati was switched to the turf by trainer Brittany Russell which has proven to be a great decision. She nabbed her first victory since her debut this May over Pimlico’s turf course, snapping a six race losing streak where she was mostly uncompetitive. Bosserati has followed up that victory with two more wins on the turf, each time stepping up in class from claiming company to allowance and most recently a stakes victory at Laurel Park. Continuing on this trajectory as one who clearly favors the grass, Bosserati should fit right in with this field, especially when you factor in her impressive early speed and spotless record at this distance. Jockey Tyler Gaffalione figures to be aggressive with this longshot, with blistering pace-setting fractions of a twenty-one and two-fifths quarter and a forty-three and three half mile being run in her last victory. With a sharp break and continued success on the turf, this filly could be one to steal this race and pick up her second stakes win. Bosserati was bred by Joel Politi, who is also the owner.
