Delaware Park picks and analysis: July 15, 2023
Live racing at Delaware Park kicks off May 24 and runs through late October.
Once again this year, we will have Delaware Park picks and analysis for every day of live racing at the venerable track. Today’s card features eight races, and first post is 12:30 EDT.
Race #1 Picks:
: 2-4-3-6
In this $16,000 claiming race at 5 1/2 furlongs, #2 Six Whips (8-5) showed speed and faded in a race taken off the turf in last. Two races back he led but got edged out by the favorite in a $28,000 claiming race. This colt has enough speed to control the pace with this group of horses, and we have him on top. #4 Big Rowdy Dan (5-2) is in decent form. He made a big late run in last but started a little too late. He fits well here. #3 Luckily Leyton (3-1) left the maiden ranks in a PA-bred race in last. He has some early speed and should be competitive here.
Race #2 Picks: 4-2-5-1
In this $16,000 N3L race at 1 1/16 miles on the turf, #4 Box Office Warrior (3-2) won here two back on the turf with a 73-speed rating, then shipped to Parx and ran a game third in a $28,000 claiming race. Now coming back to Delaware and this looks like an excellent spot. #2 Grecian Pharoah (8-1) has some decent turf races and should be considered. Will be a factor if he can get back to running speed figures in the 70s. #5 Irish Kitten (5-2) is a filly running against the boys. She won her last in a race taken off the turf and had some good turf races in Tampa earlier this year.
Race #3 Picks: 6-1-4-7
In this $50,000 maiden claiming race for 2-year-olds at five furlongs, #6 Prince Fred (2-1) will be making his second start for Brittany Russell. He showed some brief speed his last out and has been working well since that race. He looks well placed here. #1 Rubys Flash (3-1) showed early speed in a maiden race and now moving to maiden claiming. Trainer Jamie Ness has five wins in eleven tries this year when moving from MSW to MCL. #4 Play Hard (4-1) will be making his first start with a solid workout line and we’ll put him in the third position.

Race #4 Picks:1-6-2-4
In the $150,000 Christiana Stakes for three-year-old fillies at 1 1/8 miles on the turf, #1 Miss Riddler (9-5) had the lead but faded late in the Grade 3 Regret Stakes at Churchill Downs in last. That race was also at a mile and one eighth and so she should be able to handle today’s distance. She’s the one the others will be chasing late, and we think she will hold on to the lead. #6 Hang the Moon (2-1) has been running in one-mile stakes races and closing late, but has been running out of ground. She got jostled in the early stages of the Hilltop Stakes but still made-up ground in the stretch. She looks like she wants the extra eighth of mile she will get it today. She will be charging late. #2 Faccia Bella (12-1) does not have the class of the others, but she won at this distance on the turf earlier this year and none of the remaining horses in this race have proven they can win when they go that far.
Race #5 Picks: 4-3-5-2
In this allowance/optional claiming race for fillies and mares at one mile and 70 yards, #4 Waterworks (7-2) dug in and held the place spot in last. She was no match for the odds-on favorite, but it was still a good performance and she showed a second burst of speed in the stretch. We have her on top today. #3 Respectfully (9-5) got the lead in the Laurel slop in last and coasted home to a 9 ½-length victory posting an 87 speed figure. She will win if she can match that effort, but she may have more pressure today. #5 Peppermint Class (5-2) should improve in second race after a break, and it would not be shocking if she challenges for the top spot.
Joe’s Notes
- Two Friday wins for jockey Jeiron Barbosa, who now has six at the meet…
- Hard-hitting starter allowance runner The Wolfman made his first start since last November in the fourth and didn’t miss a beat, rolling to a 5 1/2-length triumph…
Race #6 Picks: 6-8-11-9
In this $28,000 claiming race at one mile and 70 yards on the turf, #6 Kitten Around (4-1) had some early speed in last but found first level allowance company too tough. Now he will try the claiming ranks for the first time. This three-year-old is improving in every race and should be a contender today. #8 Joe Brains (6-1) has shownability on the turf but has not been able to get his second win. He isn’t facing any monsters today and will be in the mix. #11 Kenner (9-2) will be stretching out on the grass after trying a sprint. He may like the extra distance.
Race #7 Picks: 5-6-2-3
In this allowance/optional claiming race at 1 1/16 miles, #5 Passage of Lines (4-1) is coming from Parx where he has been in good form. He ran second in a route last time after running in series of sprints. Jamie Ness is starting to get hot, which he usually does toward the middle of this meet. This gelding looks well positioned to win today. #6 Stacks of Silver (6-1) has been away since October, but he has been working well and Gary Capuano usually has them ready to run with a 36% winning percentage in 22 tries when bringing back horses that have not raced in over six months. #2 Ain’t Wasting Time (2-1) missed by a nose last time with an 83 speed figure. A definite contender.
Race #8 Picks: 2-3-1-6
In the $150,000 Kent Stakes for three-year-olds at 1 3/8 miles on the turf, #2 Really Good (3-1) got pinched back early in the Hawthorne Derby but rallied in the stretch to finish second. The Breeders Cup Juvenile Turf was too tough, but this colt has faced tough competition in Kentucky, and we are going to pick him to win the Kent Stakes. #3 Freedom Trail (2-1) was not fast enough to win against graded stakes competition but was not embarrassed, either, and posted speed figures in the 80s. This closer will be charging late and has to be considered one of the top contenders. #1 Regal Kingdom (6-1) has been running very well. He got behind a wall of horses in an allowance race at Belmont in last, and still managed to pass several horses in the stretch. We think this will be a live longshot.
