Nick’s Picks: Colonial Downs picks July 21, 2023

Nick’s Picks is back with Colonial Downs picks and analysis during the 2022 live meeting.

As he has done every year since Colonial Downs opened — all the way back in 1997 — Nick Hahn will share his picks and analysis, plus news and notes and opinions on the Colonial meet. There is no better guide to racing in New Kent than Nick Hahn!

This year’s Colonial Downs meet will feature some things that are new and some that are familiar. Familiar trainer faces include Colonial regulars Graham Motion, Karen Godsey, Kelsey Danner, Mike Tomlinson and Mike Trombetta, along with multiple leading trainer Michael Stidham.

On the jockey side, look for defending champion Jevian Toledo, who is looking forward to a busy summer in New Kent; Colonial’s all-time leading jockey Horacio Karamanos; Antonio Gallardo, a perennial top rider at Tampa Bay Downs in the winter months; Adam Beschizza; and Joe Rocco, Jr.

  • Pick 6: $1,324

VAN CLIEF HOMETOWN EDGESaturday’s Van Clief Stakes in named in honor of the Van Clief family in Charlottesville that bred 1947 Kentucky Derby winner Jet Pilot.  There’s been a hometown edge to the 5 1/2-furlong turf sprint with winners such as Bay Eagle (Albemarle Stud), Rahy’s Chance (Foxcroft Farm), Princess Theorem (Dewberry), and two-time winner Frisky Thunder (Braeburn).

Not this year, though: Front Run the Fed is back to defend against this year’s field that doesn’t appear to have that local angle. Front Run the Fed is 5-1 on the morning line; the 5-2 favorite is the Pennsylvania-bred Witty, a half-brother to turf sprinting superstar Caravel.

BAND OR BRED? Is it the name of a horse? Or the name of a band?

Today it’s… New Potato Caboose: Band or bred?

Thursday:  Bop was the three-time winner of the Punch Line between 2003-2005 who set track and world records sprinting on  turf for trainer Mike Trombetta and owner Jonas Cash.
