Delaware Park picks and analysis: July 27, 2023
Live racing at Delaware Park kicks off May 24 and runs through late October.
Once again this year, we will have Delaware Park picks and analysis for every day of live racing at the venerable track. Today’s card features eight races, and first post is 12:30 EDT.
Today’s carryovers: None
Race #1 Picks: 7-2-1-5
In this $5000 claiming race for fillies and mares at 5 ½ furlongs, #7 Rosy Apple (4-1) weakened late in last try while being claimed by Juan Arriagada. Now making her second start with bottom-level claimers and should improve today. #2 Protomagic (2-1) tried the turf and is now moving back to dirt. She is taking a class drop today, and her speed figures indicate she will be a top competitor today. #1 Moon Me Again (3-1) made a game outside move last time but was outfinished just before the line. If she can repeat that race, she will be right in the mix.
Race #2 Picks: 8-9-2-4
In this $6250 maiden claiming race for fillies and mares at six furlongs, #8 Shemademeblush (2-1) will be making her third start at Delaware after running against $25,000 claimers. Trainer Anthony Pecoraro has won at a 31% clip in 36 starts when his horses are taking a 50% or more class drop, and we have this filly on top. #9 Dats a Superstar (3-1) has come close to winning at this level recently. If she can repeat those races, she has a chance for the top spot today. #2 Rain of Blessing (4-1) is still a maiden after 31 starts but is taking a class drop and could find her way into the trifecta.
Race #3 Picks: 1-9-11-7
In this $26,000 claiming race at one mile and 70 yards on the turf, #1 King of Dreams (7-2) made a strong run on the turf at Monmouth in last but fell a little short. Jockey Carlos Olivero is coming with the horse, and we expect a big run today. #9 Box Office Warrior (5-2) has been in excellent form this summer and won going away in last. Now that he has moved through the conditions it’s going to be a little tougher. #11 Mr. Matuschek (5-1) is coming back from a six-month layoff but had some nice races on the synthetic surface at Gulfstream. He could surprise at a price today.

Race #4 Picks: 8-3-4-5
In this $6250 starter allowance at 1 1/16 miles, #8 Greyzer (5-1) has had two dull efforts this year at Delaware, but if he can return to his Tampa form we think he can come out on top. Third back off the layoff may be the charm, and this looks like a good spot. #3 My Redemption (3-1) has been super-consistent and very seldom runs a bad race. This gelding has good speed figures and looks well spotted here. #4 Albertano (6-1) has also been very consistent when competing against several of today’s foes in Maryland.
Race #5 Picks: 1-2-7-5
In this $38,000 maiden special weight race for two-year-olds at 7 ½ furlongs on the turf, #1 Paynter’s Prodigy (7-2) has a nice string of workouts, including one on the turf. We aren’t crazy about the inside post for an unraced two-year-old, but we think Gary Capuano may have this one ready. #2 Candy Corn (5-2) has a series of five-furlong workouts which will help this colt’s conditioning. This colt is by Twirling Candy, whose two-year-olds have won 18% of the time in their first start. #7 Work Hard (9-2) has a five furlong and a turf workout and could be in the picture.
Joe’s Notes
- Jockey Kevin Gomez is on a major heater with 10 wins in his last 14 local starts. That’s vaulted him to third with 21 wins at the meet, four behind Daniel Centeno and Jaime Rodriguez, who each have 25…
- Trainer Mac Robertson has won with five of 10 local starters…
Race #6 Picks: 2-4-5-1
In this $25,000 starter allowance race for fillies and mares at one mile, #2 Patty Cakes (2-1) was running well on the dirt earlier this year before winning his most recent race on the grass. This filly is in good form, and we have her on top. #4 Out of Sorts (3-1) has been facing tough horses this year at Pimlico and Gulfstream. She has been struggling on the turf, and a return to dirt should help her performance. #5 Champagne Toast (4-1) will be making her first start for Lacey Gaudet. Was facing stiff competition in Maryland and will be a factor If she can return to that form.
Race #7 Picks: 1-3-6-7
In this allowance/optional claiming race at six furlongs, #1 St Andrews (5-2) couldn’t get it done as the favorite last time out when he got eaten up by a hot pace but did provide a big effort to win two back. Moving back to six furlongs and we are looking for a good effort today. #3 Strugar (9-2) is always in the mix and seldom runs a bad race. Won here at Delaware in last with an 88 speed figure. #6 Lord Berrier (7-2) showed a little life in his last race. Will be making his third start for Steve Klesaris and will try to regain the form he had in Florida.
Race #8 Picks: 1-5-2-3
In this $6250 N2L claiming race at 5 1/2 furlongs, #1 Minister Quinn (4-1) had the lead but got caught last time out. He will get the lead again, and he is facing a group of horses today that might not be able to catch him. #5 Brick Town (9-5) has been running routes on synthetic and turf surfaces. Now he will return to dirt sprints. He has enough early speed to be a factor today. #2 Pressing Concern (8-1) was in the mix in his most recent race and could get into the trifecta if he repeats that effort.
