Spa selections 2023: Saratoga picks JULY 30
Race 7 – OC 80000b
1. #2 Kuramata (7-2) – In a tough field like this, it wouldn’t be a surprise for the likely favorite and Chad Brown with Flavian Prat pairing to get this first time gelding into the winner’s circle
2. #9 Easter (4-1) – Only lost the Grade III Dinner Party by two lengths, showing a solid closing kick and seems to be in good form this year but may need pace to close into
3. #12 Main Event (15-1) – Comes off a near year long layoff, but if this colt by Bernardini can return to form, his early running style gives him a chance in this group
4. #11 Jerry the Nipper (9-2) – Has shown good consistency since switching to the turf and stepping up into stakes company, with some recent efforts that compare favorably here
Race 8 – MC 30000
1. #10 Just for Luck (7-2) – Switches turf to dirt, but showed a bit more last time adding blinkers and should be a primary threat if this now Asmussen trainee takes to the new surface
2. #2 Uncle Marty (4-1) – The last couple don’t look pretty, but a few solid efforts in the fall and potential improvement dropping from state-bred maidens to claiming company is a plus
3. #8 Rule Breaker (5-2) – Adds blinkers which could help him stay a bit more forward, and goes back to dirt which he probably prefers to turf after a tough race last time out
4. #7 Atlanta’s Acuna (8-1) – Slightly better speed figures and performances than Leftembehind who made a huge move last time, but this one has a better chance to finish third or fourth
Race 9 – Grade II Bowling Green Stakes
1. #5 Soldier Rising (4-1) – This is one that usually runs well and finishes in the money, but has had winning troubles and will need to be a bit closer to the lead with Jose Ortiz to win here
2. #9 Rebel’s Romance (8-5) – This Godolphin owned gelding proved to be the best in the Breeder’s Cup Turf in November, and is the one to beat if he runs back to that form off a layoff
3. #7 The Grey Wizard (8-1) – Distance clearly isn’t an issue for this Graham Motion trainee who won at twelve furlongs in April, and should improve off the bench at good value
4. #3 Never Explain (6-1) – Not as classy as some of the Chad Brown entries, but has an impressive win in the Grade III Dinner Party two back and should adjust fine to the distance
Race 10 – Mdn 136.5k
1. #9 Oolong Hai (6-1) – Has the most speed in this field consistently, and gets a bit of distance relief which could be enough for this filly to hold on in the stretch
2. #2 Risk Free (8-1) – This filly ran well in just her second turf try last time, and after seven seconds in fifteen maiden tries, she is due for a breakthrough win with plenty of solid efforts
3. #3 Arrasou (4-1) – This first time filly gets the top flight connections of Irad Ortiz and Chad Brown, and has a bit more upside than those who have a start under their belts
4. #7 Spun Special (5-1) – This grey filly by Hard Spun has done her best running on turf, and should find her ideal race and distance here after seven maiden tries
