Delaware Park picks and analysis: August 2, 2023
Live racing at Delaware Park kicks off May 24 and runs through late October.
Once again this year, we will have Delaware Park picks and analysis for every day of live racing at the venerable track. Today’s card features eight races, and first post is 12:30 EDT.
Today’s carryovers: None
Race #1 Picks: 8-6-7-2
In this $38,000 maiden race for two-year-old fillies at 5 ½ furlongs, six of the eight entrants are first-time starters. #8 Chublin (8-1) has a good workout pattern, including two five-furlong works. We think she will be fit and ready and have this filly on top today. #6 Spin the Breeze (4-1) also has a few good workouts, and trainer McLean Robertson has won at 23% in 40 starts for a $4.03 ROI with first-time starters. #7 Charme Discret (7-2) is by Munnings, who stands for $100,000 in Kentucky. This filly looks like she has a good pedigree.
Race #2 Picks: 2-1-4-6
In this $10,000 claiming race at one mile, #2 Shane’s Jewel (7-2) tends to get the lead and fade late. This eight-year-old was running against better at Parx and should be able to hold on for the win against this group. #1 Maythehorsebwithyou (9-2) was claimed in his last race. He has been running fairly well this summer and should be in the mix today. #4 Goodluckchuck (6-1) is another horse with speed that tends to fade late. This will be his third race back since a layoff, and he is getting class relief. We expect to see improvement.
Race #3 Picks: 7-3-4-6
In this $20,000 claiming race for fillies and mares at about five furlongs on the turf, #7 Shinelikeadiamond (3-2) has already beaten several other horses in this field with races that were taken off the turf. This will be her first race on the turf if it stays on the grass, and there are no proven grass runners in here, so we have her on top. #3 Insightful (6-1) only has three races since 2021 but did show some speed in her two grass starts. One to consider. #4 Chloe Rose (6-1) has a good turf race at Penn National this year and will be a contender if she repeats that effort.

Race #4 Picks: 2-8-5-7
In this maiden race for two-year-old fillies at 5 ½ furlongs, #2 Kapatude (8-1) has been working well here at Delaware, including two five-furlong works. The filly should be fit and run well in her debut. #8 Pussycat (5-1) also has been working well with two recent five-furlong workouts. She looks like she could be prepped and ready to go. #5 Rapid Ruby (3-1) ran well in her first two races but was not able to win. That racing experience should help her today.
Race #5 Picks: 6-3-4-1
In this maiden special weight race at about five furlongs on the turf, #6 Silver Style (6-1) ran a sharp turf sprint two back at Monmouth. The 7 ½-furlong distance may have been a little too long in last, but that effort should help him today. #3 Holla At Your Boy (7-2) seems to be rounding into form with a solid turf sprint effort in June. Has been working well since then and looks ready. #4 Rockingham Joe (5-2) has been running well on the turf but has a habit of fading in the last furlong. He should be able to get a piece of the action with this group. Getting Lasix today which might help.
Joe’s Notes
- Delaware canceled two days last week because of the heat…
- Trainer Jamie Ness sent out five local runners, with three of them winning and the other two finishing second. In the last 30 days, he’s 18-for-37 at DelPark, a 49% strike rate…
Race #6 Picks: 10-2-9-3
In this optional claiming/starter allowance race at one mile, It’s hard to bet against #10 Holdtheflight (3-1). This winner of four straight was in great form but has been off for three months. There was no injury involved because he has consistent workouts throughout his break. If he is in shape, he should handle this field. #2 Lookin At Roses (6-1) has been running well since making the move from Gulfstream. Parx shippers usually do well here, and this one looks ready for a big effort. #9 Boss Logic (9-2) has been running well in Maryland and at Parx this year. He will be laying just off the pace and looking to rally past the leaders late.
Race #7 Picks: 4-1-2-3
In this $16,000 N2L claiming race at about 1 1/16 miles on the turf, #4 Prophets Voice (IRE) (8-1) will be making his third start in the United States and is dropping to a level where he should be able to compete. He was in the middle of the pack in last, but we are looking for improvement today. #1 Ghost of Khozan (5-1) did show some speed on the turf in last after finally leaving the maiden ranks on dirt. He will be in the mix with this group if he can repeat his last effort. #2 Maybe It’s Time (12-1) has struggled but most of his best races have been on the grass. One to consider.
Race #8 Picks: 2-4-5-3
In this #16,000 claiming race at six furlongs #2 Clash A.J. (6-1) was claimed at Belmont last time out for $16,000. He has been working well since then, and we are looking for improvement. His speed figures indicate he will be a top contender today. #4 Six Whips (5-2) has been in good form recently. He won and was claimed last time out. If he repeats last, he could take the top spot. #5 Lord Uhtred (7-2) has made all but one of his starts in Maryland this year, and the Ness/Rodriguez combination is always dangerous when they have a horse coming in from Maryland. He will be in the mix.
