RACE 1: CLAIMING $5,000 (CONDITIONED), 3-YEAR-OLDS AND UP, 6 FURLONGS
7-6-2-1
#7 Seanow (7-5) once again has a rough draw, but that didn’t hamper him much last out at Delaware Park. He got stuck in the middle of the track almost the whole way, but fought on throughout and lost only to a favored rival who saved a bit more ground. This one should sit near the pace and will be ready to pounce on the far turn. #6 The Cairo Kid (2-1) has had some time off since his last start, where he broke awkwardly and showed little from there. He may have injured himself in that race, as he hasn’t been seen since that May 12 outing. He beat starter allowance foes twice earlier this year, but had been tailing off a bit in his recent starts, rating near the pace but showing no late kick. He’ll use this spot to ease back into racing before possibly tackling better next out. #2 Strike Me Down (6-1) did less than nothing last out at Parx, but ran some solid figures on dirt earlier this year. Leading trainer Jamie Ness and leading rider Jaime Rodriguez team up with him; anyone they send out is dangerous.
RACE 2: CLAIMING $16,000 (N/W2L), 3-YEAR-OLDS AND UP, FILLIES AND MARES, 5 1/2 FURLONGS (GRASS)
2-1-6-4
#2 Fivecommatwo (2-1) made her grass debut against similar two races ago, and closed sharply for second at 36-1. You won’t get those kind of odds today, as she gets back a service on which she’s shown aptitude, and no one else in here really has. #1 Ballyhooly (5-2) exits the same race as Fivecommatwo, where she was a strong-closing fourth third off an 18-month layoff. Usually, she’s more forwardly placed, and will try to stay close to the lead in this one. #6 Queen Tapiture (10-1) has improved her brisnet figure in each of her last two grass starts, peaking at a 70 when a hard-charging fifth in the season opener. She’s shown speed an d aded going longer in her last two races on dirt; we’ll see if cutting back helps the cause.
- Sea Dancer gets valuable stakes win in CarouselSea Dancer, a younger half-sis to one of the top turf horses in the country, earned her first stakes win in Saturday’s Carousel at Laurel Park.
RACE 3: MAIDEN CLAIMING $20,000, 3, 4, AND 5-YEAR-OLDS, 5 1/2 FURLONGS
6-3-2-1
#6 Bill of Rights (5-2) ships down from New York for his local debut for Holly Ferris. He came from off the pace to finish a mild sixth on debut, then battled through fast fractions last out and faded. He’s facing much easier rivals here, and as long as he takes to dirt at all he should handle them with ease. #3 Dowsing Rod (9-5) finally put it all together second off the layoff last out, improving dramatically to a 78 in a determined front-running effort. This looks like the right kind of level for him. #2 Sweet Syntax (3-1), a fellow Jerry Robb trainee, was well-bet first time out, but checked out of contention on the turn and was not persevered with from there. A half-brother to Fille d’Esprit, he’s a bit of a wild card but looks to have some upside.
RACE 4: ALLOWANCE (N/W1X), 3-YEAR-OLDS AND UP, MD-BRED/SIRED, 5 1/2 FURLONGS (GRASS)
1-7-4-3
#1 Zip Line to Heaven (7-2) matched his career-best figure last out with an 82. He rated off the pace and showed mild punch second off the layoff to get third. While I’m not sure if he has the late punch needed to win at this level, he’s in the best recent form of these and should sit a good trip towards the rail. #7 Sue Loves Barbados (9-2) got up to win going away around two turns last out, then struggled against better over the soft Delaware Park grass last out. He generally runs better with more distance, but should at least be able to close for a slice. #4 Kobe Tough (3-1) exits the same race as Zip Line to Heaven, where he was fourth with an improved 80. He touched the 90s a few times last year and will try to get back to that form third off the layoff.
RACE 5: ALLOWANCE OPTIONAL CLAIMING (N/W2X), 3-YEAR-OLDS AND UP, 1 1/16 MILES
1-3-5-2
The form of #1 Armstrong (7-2) might be obscured somewhat by his last start, where he was outclassed in the Manila Stakes. However, he turned in impressive efforts over the Tapeta against softer at Gulfstream Park earlier this year, and has shown good tactical speed. He looks prime for a rebound. #3 Rustys Gfivefifty (12-1) steps back up this level first off the claim by Ferris Allen. He churned on behind slow paces in his last two starts and got only minor shares, but should get a pace to run into here, with the speedy Nostalgic Run in the race. #5 Galerio (9-5) chased and missed against better allowance foes in his last few starts, and now faces an easier field than he’s seen in a while. It’s no secret that he loves this track; does this 7-year-old have enough left in the tank to win against these?
RACE 6: CLAIMING $25,000 (N/W2L), 3-YEAR-OLDS AND UP, 5 1/2 FURLONGS (GRASS)
11-3-10-7
#11 Dark and Fitzy (3-1) has never gone shorter than a mile until now, but he’s cutting back for his first start since mid-March. He has abundant early speed, and has hit the exacta all three times he’s raced on grass. There’s some serious speed drawn to his inside, in Landon Jack, but Dark and Fitzy tends to last much longer on the lead than that rival, who likes to zoom early and stop. #3 Ragtime Riches (6-1) drops in class and cuts back from a mile for Anthony Farrior and Arnaldo Bocachica. He closed well to lose by less than two lengths against better two starts ago, including B Determined and Boss Man J J, who finished 1-2 against better on July 15. This one would take advantage of a hot pace. #10 Kenner (6-1) goes second off a brief layoff for Jamie Ness and Jaime Rodriguez and led most of the way going two turns at Delaware last out before fading. He ran a 77 that day, easily his best mark on grass, and will try to improve on that number with a stalking trip.
- “Miracle” horse All Caps wins first in two yearsAll Caps nearly died from an infection two years ago. So how did she get to the winner’s circle at Charles Town Saturday? “A miracle,” says her owner.
RACE 7: ALLOWANCE (N/W1X), 3-YEAR-OLDS AND UP, MD-BRED/SIRED, 6 FURLONGS
2-3-7-5
After two mid efforts to begin his career, #2 Calming Storm (7-2) stepped up to break his maiden in impressive style last out. He drafted off the pace towards the rail, then kicked away in the stretch while only being shown the stick in the last sixteenth. His figure of 87 is a lifetime-top by 13 points. Almost everyone else in the race has at least some early speed, so he should get another great setup. #3 Great Heavens (3-1) scratched out of Saturday’s Star de Naskra Stakes to run here. He’s been in consistent form, having run in the low 80s in each of his three starts, and closed well late against a better field last out. Last year’s Maryland Million Starter Handicap winner, #7 The Wolfman (7-5), returned to the races off a long layoff last out and easily handled the field by 5 1/2 lengths. He ran a 85 that day, not far from the mid-90s figures he consistently reeled off last year.
RACE 8: MAIDEN CLAIMING $45,000, 3, 4, AND 5-YEAR-OLDS, 1 1/16 MILES (GRASS)
5-6-7-3
#5 Hay Chief (7-2) dipped into waters that were a little too deep last out, showing little in the Edward P. Evans Stakes at Colonial Downs. Prior to that, he had run well against these types, earning a pair of figures in the 70s while rallying well from far off the pace. Look for him to be closer to the pace than usual, with the small field and likely modest early tempo. #6 Maryland Moon (5-2) fell further off the pace than usual last out and was no match for the top two, but had run figures of 75 and 80 against similar rivals in his last two starts. He looks like the type who’s always on the verge of putting it together; we’ll see if he comes together here. #7 Sneaking Suspicion (3-1) had trouble settling in his last start, but ran on well when he got set and lost by 2 1/2 lengths. Sheldon Russell keeps the mount for the second race in a row and may choose to go to the front in a race without much speed.
