MID-ATLANTIC THREE STARS: august 7
Plenty of racing action took place throughout the Mid-Atlantic this past week.
Here’s a look at the “three stars” of each track:
Region’s Best
FIRST STAR: ALL THAT MAGIC. Sunday’s Incredible Revenge Stakes at Monmouth Park featured a fantastic stretch duel between favored All That Magic, in search of her fourth win in a row, and Train to Artemus, looking for her fourth stakes victory of the year. All That Magic set the early pace, and although Train to Artemus looked ready to go by on the outside, the Kate Demasi-trained favorite dug in and held on resolutely. She hit the wire a nose in front of Train to Artemus, covering 5 1/2 furlongs on grass in 1:03.34. The winner is owned by Pewter Stable and Spedale Family Racing LLC and was ridden by Nik Juarez.
SECOND STAR: SWIRVIN. The day before at Monmouth, 3-year-old dirt sprinters took to the track in the Jersey Shore Stakes. Swirvin, making his first start outside of Gulfstream Park, prevailed by 2 3/4 lengths. He stalked the pace in the three-path, made his move on the turn, and wore down early leaders Super Chow and Recruiter before drawing clear in the last eighth. The victory improved his career mark to 3-for-4 lifetime, with earnings of $126,075. Trevor McCarthy had the mount for owner Bassett Stables and trainer Saffie Joseph.
THIRD STAR: COASTAL MISSION. This 4-year-old West Virginia-bred gelding continued a dominant year on Thursday, winning an open allowance race by 2 3/4 lengths. Sent off as the even-money favorite in the seven-horse field, he broke on top and was never seriously challenged, keeping second choice Classier at bay throughout. The final time for seven furlongs was 1:24.25, as the Coleswood Farm Inc. homebred won his fourth in a row and his sixth of the year from seven starts. He’s trained by Jeff Runco and ridden by Arnaldo Bocachica.
