Delaware Park picks and analysis: August 9, 2023
Live racing at Delaware Park kicks off May 24 and runs through late October.
Once again this year, we will have Delaware Park picks and analysis for every day of live racing at the venerable track. Today’s card features eight races, and first post is 12:30 EDT.
Today’s carryovers: Early Pick 5, $8,384; Late Pick 5, $5,255
Race #1 Picks: 5-1-8-6
In this $6250 maiden claiming race at one mile and 70 yards, #5 Mr Laoban (2-1) is taking a class a drop and showed some late speed against better at Parx in last. He has had a couple good workouts since last his last race and we have him on top. #1 Twirling Charlie (8-1) showed some early speed last time and seems be in the right spot to show improvement. We think he will be in the mix today. #8 Capt Complicated (3-1) ran well in last try at this level and appears to be spotted well.
Race #2 Picks: 4-6-3-5
In this $12,500 claiming race for fillies and mares at one mile, #4 Matoula (3-1) will be making her second start this year after a long break. Showed speed in a sprint at Parx last time but was disqualified. Now moving back to a route and she has two wins in six lifetime starts at this distance. #6 Shaolin (2-1) will be returning to dirt after trying the grass. She showed some speed in dirt races earlier in the year. Trainer Kiri Brion has won at 28% in 18 tries when switching from turf to dirt. #3 Rationalmillennial (5-1) won her only start at Delaware by five lengths two races back. It’s possible she likes this track. One to consider.
Race #3 Picks: 5-12-7-9 (Dirt Picks: 12-11-9-1)
In this maiden claiming race for fillies and mares at about one mile and 70 yards on the turf, #5 Hopeful Cure (6-1) did not run well in her last try at Colonial, but prior to that she had a couple of good races here at Delaware. We think she is an improving three-year-old who is sitting on a big race. #12 Save Your Tears (4-1) has a good shot today if she draws in. She has been competing against better horses, and trainer Mike Pino has won five races in fifteen attempts when switching from dirt to grass. #7 Allie’s Halo (12-1) has shown some life in her two turf starts and may improve.

Race #4 Picks: 6-3-1-2
In this $20,000 claiming race for fillies and mares at six furlongs, #6 You’re the One (3-1) has won two straight and is in good form. Now she is moving up the claiming ladder. Her early speed will help her today as there is not a lot of other early speed in this race. We think she will make it three-straight. #3 Fabulous Candy (10-1) didn’t like the turf last time and is now returning to dirt, where she ran well in May. She should be in the mix. #1 Child Proof (8-1) seems to like the Delaware main track and has run well in her last two tries. We think she will make an impact today.
Race #5 Picks: 8-5-9-2 (Dirt Picks: 10-7-4-5)
In this $38,000 maiden race for fillies and mares at about one mile and 70 yards on the turf, #8 Compass Rises (10-1) showed some late speed in her turf debut here at Delaware. We are looking for improvement today and think there is value in this filly. #5 Heavenly Appointed (3-1) held her own when facing tough competition at Saratoga. She looks like a top contender today and could take the top spot. #9 Evita (7-2) struggled against better horses at Belmont but has connections that must be respected and isn’t facing any monsters today. One to watch. #2 Treasured Gem (5-1) has lots of early foot and had a good race on the synthetic at Presque Isle Downs recently. This filly may try to steal the race.
Joe’s Notes
- A Bit Bad N Boujee, a 38-1 winner in race four Saturday, managed to blow up both the early and late pick 5s…
- Jockey Angel Arroyo won four on Saturday, none as the favorite, while Ruben Silvera won two…
Race #6 Picks: 6-8-7-2
In this optional claiming/starter allowance race for fillies and mares at six furlongs, #6 Valuable Breigh (10-1) has lots of early speed, and it lasted throughout the race in her first race at Delaware under new trainer Angel Castillo. She is talking a step up in condition, but we think she will surprise with her early speed again today. #8 Cartwheel (2-1) will be running late and passing fading horses. Jamie Ness is winning at 29% this meet and his horses are always dangerous. #7 Prospera (4-1) will be making her first start under Elliot Sullivan who wins at 22% after a claim. She was running very well at Parx earlier this year and could be a factor if she returns to that form.
Race #7 Picks: 2-9-10-7 (Dirt Picks: 6-7-11-4)
In this second-level allowance/optional claiming race for fillies and mares at about five furlongs on the turf, #2 Afandi (9-2) always puts in a good effort. This mare has two wins and a second in three tries at Delaware Park. She did just run twelve days ago and was in a tough race, so we are a little concerned about a bounce, but we still rate her on top. #9 Twirling Savi (7-2) is a closer who will be making her second start after a long break. We are looking for improvement today and she should make an impact on this race. Trainer Mac Robertson has 5 wins in 12 starts for a 42% winning percentage this meet. #10 Above the Limit (5-2) is the speed burner in the race and will try to lead from start to finish. Will be dangerous if she gets clear.
Race #8 Picks: 3-2-8-7
In this $5000 claiming race at one mile, #3 Tiny Tin (6-1) is making his third start of the year. He is now dropping to bottom level-claimers. He will be running late and may have enough to pass these. #2 Cosmic Treasure (4-1) was running well earlier in the year and was claimed last time out. He will be back under the training of Eliot Sullivan, who was his trainer previously. #8 Night Ops (6-1) was claimed last time and will be making his first start for trainer Elliott Soto-Martinez, who has won at 29% in 14 attempts on first after a claim.
