The Maryland Racing Commission on Dec. 23 signed off on the new nonprofit Maryland Jockey Club to operate Laurel Park in the new year.
Race 7 – OC 62500n1x
1. #8 Root Cause (9-2) – The only one in this field with a win at the distance, this Chad Brown trainee by Into Mischief will be closing late with Joel Rosario who rides for Irad Ortiz here
2. #3 Alpha Bella (5-1) – Has a couple near wins at graded stakes level, now coming off a layoff where her best races give her as good a chance as any to win here
3. #2B No Show Jammy Jo (7-2) – The post isn’t ideal, but this filly has room to improve after breaking maiden last time out and Manny Franco has ridden well for Graham Motion
4. #10 Be My Sunshine (8-1) – Drops out of a grade III and returns to turf where this filly has been best but gets a tough outside post draw here otherwise would be a top choice
Race 8 – Clm 16000n2L
1. #5 Moving Pictures (5-2) – Five for eight in the money on the dirt, including a nice closing effort at this class two months ago and should be the top choice here
2. #4 With Know Name (8-1) – First time gelding and lasix runner comes out of a stakes try in October which didn’t go well, but won before that and may be closing late
3. #2 Magical Ways (2-1) – Back to back brutal finishes, but if this colt can get to the lead, maybe he has a chance to hold on in the money and improve on a class drop
4. #1 Ginnsu Warrior (20-1) – Another with some distant finishes, but has hit the board in half of his dirt starts and has a pair of solid seconds at seven furlongs
Race 9 – Alw 50000s
1. #9 Unleash the Power (3-1) – This gelding by Curlin has some recent races and speed figures that put him amongst the best here and Saez should have him in good position early
2. #10 Sonic Speed (8-1) – Has been finding himself close to the winners in recent efforts, so far with some solid tries this year against this company and should have a chance late
3. #11 Kingfish Stevens (9-2) – Gets a tough post, but may be the classiest of this group and has been working well enough to be in top form to have winning chances here
4. #3 Front Man (8-1) – Has won over this track and has two solid efforts this year, if Alvarado can keep this gelding close enough he is good enough to win at a price
Race 10 – MC 40000
1. #8 Liquid Addiction (7-2) – Gets a plus purely for dropping out of open maiden races and into this claiming field, with a couple of solid efforts and respect from the betting public
2. #6 Kasimba (3-1) – His most recent try in his first turf effort was probably the best race of anyone in this group, and a repeat of that could be enough to put him in the winner’s circle
3. #7 Insanity It Seems (4-1) – Went gate to wire in his debut a year ago before being disqualified, now coming off a long layoff for Wesley Ward and will need to improve to win
4. #1 The Compas Man (8-1) – This first time gelding seems to be stepping forward a bit, and may have an advantage in his early running style against an underwhelming group
