Delaware Park picks and analysis: August 12, 2023

Live racing at Delaware Park kicks off May 24 and runs through late October.

Once again this year, we will have Delaware Park picks and analysis for every day of live racing at the venerable track. Today’s card features eight races, and first post is 12:30 EDT.

Today’s carryovers: None

Race #1 Picks: 2-3-4-6

This $20,000 maiden claiming race for two-year-old-fillies at five furlongs is mostly first-time starters. Pedigree analysis is not very useful when analyzing maiden claimers so we will focus on workouts and past performances. #2 Chublin (4-1) has two five-furlong workouts including one here at Delaware in 1:02 flat. We like this filly on top today. #3 Ritz on Broadway (5-2) has shown some speed in her previous starts, and with three lifetime races she has more experience than her foes today. #4 Turbo Millie (6-1) has been working well here at Delaware. Trainer Andy Simoff has four wins and four second-place finishes in 15 starts at Delaware this year.

Race #2 Picks: 6-3-5-4

In this $16,000 N2L claiming race at one mile and 70 yards, #6 Oiler (5-2) dropped to this class level in last and had the lead but faded. Andrew Wolfsont will be aboard again, and we are looking for improvement today. #3 Golden Wildcat (7-2) won a maiden race two back before fading in a race taken off the turf. Now moving from Parx to Delaware where trainer Ernesto Padilla has won both his starts this year. #5 Keranos (9-5) closed to finish second in last and got by Oiler. A repeat of that race will put him in contention again.

Race #3 Picks: 7-1-3-6

In this $38,000 maiden race for two-year-olds at one mile, #7 Randazzo (2-1) is a Godolphin colt by top sire Into Mischief who stands for $250,000 in Kentucky. This sire’s two-year-old first-time starters have won at a 16% clip. This colt has some sharp five-furlong workouts, and we have him on top. #1 Thedingoateyobaby (3-1) was purchased at the January Keeneland sale for $125.000.  He has a nice workout line, including a five-furlong outing. One to watch. #3 Dreamery (9-2) has been running against tough competition in New York and is now stretching out. He may surprise if he wants the extra distance.

Race #4 Picks: 9-2-6-4

In this $6250 N2L claiming race for fillies and mares at six furlongs, #9 Lunita (7-2) was leading but got nailed at the finish line in last. She still beat the third-place finisher by six lengths, and we think she is a little bit better than the rest of today’s field. #2 Ellie Victorina (4-1) has been running against better horses in Maryland and been competitive. Now taking a class drop for Mario Serey Jr. and looks well placed. #6 Linahaspecshoes (5-2) is taking a class drop but will have to improve to win today. She looks good enough to be in the mix.

Race #5 Picks: 6-2-10-3

All races are off the turf today.

Joe’s Notes

  • Apprentice Axel Concepcion won three on Thursday and now has nine wins from 36 starts at the meet (25%)…
  • One of those wins came aboard 15-1 Haint Blue for trainer Ham Smith; that was the longest-priced winner of the day…

Race #6 Picks: 4-5-3-2

In this optional claiming/starter allowance race at 5 ½ furlongs, #4 Great Go Go (6-1) usually gets the lead but sometimes has a hard time holding onto it. He is facing a weak field today, and we think his speed will last long enough to cross the finish line first. #5 The Sicarii (2-1) was claimed last time out and won his second straight in the process. Trainer Michael Simone has won at 23% in 35 attempts on first after a claim. #3 Lord Berrier (3-1) is dropping in class and had a few good races at Tampa earlier in the year.

Race #7 Picks: 4-2-11-9

All races are off the turf today.

Race #8 Picks: 1-6-2-8

In this $6250 maiden claiming race for filles and mares at six furlongs, #1 Peace Pact (8-1) will be making her second start of the year for Richard Hendriks. She did flash some speed last time out and that might be enough to defeat this group. #6 Red River Susi (6-1) struggled against better and is now dropping to a more reasonable class level. She could surprise today. #2 Don’t Annoy Me (5-2) has early speed but fades late. She will take the lead again and make the others chase.
