How our contest players see Charles Town Classic
Charles Town Classic night features two graded stakes, the Grade 2 Charles Town Classic and Grade 3 Charles Town Oaks, and several other open stakes, as well as a bevy of West Virginia-bred contests.
It also features a free handicapping contest here on The Racing Biz, and we thought it would be fun to take a look at the races the way our contest players see it. So we broke down the five biggest races of the evening the way our first 100 entries saw it.
RUSSELL ROAD STAKES – 4yo and up, 7f
This race features a 9-5 favorite in Benevengo, which would imply a pretty strong favorite. That’s not, however, how our contest participants see it. They see a pretty wide-open affair, in fact. To wit:
HORSE | ODDS |
10. Baby Yoda | 7-2 |
8. Benevengo | 9-2 |
1. Coastal Mission | 5-1 |
2. Pro Oxidant | 6-1 |
4. Payne | 9-1 |
The rest of the field are all 15-1 or longer.
PINK RIBBON STAKES – Filies and mares 3yo and up, 7f
Only four are left after scratches, with the anticipated faceoff of Frank’s Rockette and Society now all but certain to take place. Who’ll win? Our contest players see those two as strong favorites, with no one else getting much love.
HORSE | ODDS |
7. Society | 1-1 |
4. Frank’s Rockette | 3-2 |
3. Heartyconstitution | 8-1 |
2. Majestic Ways | 33-1 |

ROBERT HILTON MEMORIAL STAKES, 3yo, 7f
Ryvit gets the nod as the 9-5 favorite on the morning line. Our handicappers pretty much agree, making the graded stakes winner 2-1. Where they veer off, however, is with Lord Miles; he’s 15-1 on the morning line, but our ‘cappers like him to the tune of 6-1.
HORSE | ODDS |
10. Ryvit | 2-1 |
1. Swirvin | 4-1 |
6. Lord Miles | 6-1 |
7. Prince of Jericho | 7-1 |
5. Coffeewithchris | 10-1 |
4. Super Accelerate | 13-1 |
2. Ghost Hero | 21-1 |
9. Damon’s Mound | 21-1 |
8. Toddchero | 88-1 |
GRADE 3 CHARLES TOWN OAKS, 3yo fillies, 7f
Our handicappers like morning line favorite Hoosier Philly even more than the linemaker does, making her 2-1 in a race in which she is 3-1 on the line. That would raise the prices of other major contenders.
HORSE | ODDS |
6. Hoosier Philly | 2-1 |
1. Vahva | 6-1 |
10. Undervalued Asset | 6-1 |
8. Lily Poo | 7-1 |
3. Interpolate | 11-1 |
4. Metaphysical | 15-1 |
5. Chismosa | 15-1 |
2. Late Frost | 18-1 |
7. Imonra | 23-1 |
9. Opus Forty Two | 47-1 |
GRADE 2 CHARLES TOWN CLASSIC, 3yo and up, 1 1/18 miles
The linemaker couldn’t really split Giant Game (5-2) or Skippylongstocking (3-1). But our contest players sure could, making the latter 2-1 and the former the 7-1 co-third choice.
HORSE | ODDS |
5. Skippylongstocking | 2-1 |
7. Call Me Fast | 5-1 |
4. Doppelganger | 7-1 |
2. Giant Game | 7-1 |
8. Dash Attack | 11-1 |
3. Perfect Flight | 12-1 |
9. Muad’dib | 15-1 |
