Delaware Park picks and analysis: September 8, 2023

Live racing at Delaware Park kicks off May 24 and runs through late October.

Once again this year, we will have Delaware Park picks and analysis for every day of live racing at the venerable track. Today’s card features eight races, and first post is 12:30 EDT.

Today’s carryovers: None

Race #1 Picks: 4-7-2-3

In this $25,000 maiden claiming race for two-year-olds at 5 ½ furlongs, #4 All the Way (3-1) has been working well, including a couple of gate works and a five-furlong move July 14. He was purchased for $28,000. Phillip Capuano has four wins in 10 starts at Delaware and has won with five of 11 first-time starters this year. #7 Finicky (2-1) has four races under his belt and that experience will help. He ran a solid sprint at this level on the dirt two back and fits well here. #2 Eddie Felson (8-1) has been working well with a couple five-furlong workouts.

Race #2 Picks: 6-4-2-1

In this $12,500 claiming race for fillies and mares at six furlongs, #6 Gwynedd (9-5) is dropping down in class after tiring in recent races. She should have an edge with this field. #4 Lunita (5-2) is moving up after being claimed last time out.  If she repeats her last two, she will be in contention. #2 Bodacious Bren (6-1) is making her first start of the year and getting Lasix.Trainer Edward Allard has won five races in 20 attempts when bringing horse back from a greater than 180-day layoff.

Race #3 Picks: 4-1-7-5

In this $38,000 maiden race for two-year-old fillies at six furlongs, #4 Contessa’s Song (4-1) led most of the race before fading late in her debut try. She should improve off that effort and we have her on top. #1 Get Ready Gal (3-1) ran evenly after getting bumped in her debut. Both her trainer and jockey have been red hot at this meet and she looks dangerous here. #7 Arch Street (2-1) just missed by a nose in her debut and should improve off that experience.

Race #4 Picks: 3-5-1-4

In his second level allowance race/ optional claimer for fillies and mares at five furlongs on the turf, #3 Baby Steps (5-2) is a consistent turf sprint runner who has faced tough competition in her career. She looks the best of this group and we have her on top. #5 Cora Pearl (7-2) is an improving three-year-old who seems to be rounding into form. May be ready for a blowout performance. #1 Prove My Love (9-5) has won both her turf sprints at Delaware Park and fits well here.

Race #5 Picks: 5-4-1-3

In this $40,000 starter allowance race for fillies and mares at six furlongs, many of these horses have been facing each other recently and are all pretty evenly matched. #5 Jess’s Gypsy Girl (6-1) is a big horse who didn’t get started until it was too late in last. This will be her second race over the track, and with a little better start we think she will surprise today. #4 Tipsy Girl (7-2) could not match the winner in last, but still managed to beat most of this field. If she matches that race she will compete for the win again. #1 Touisset (9-5) has shown the ability to get the lead, and if she gets free with no pressure today she could take it from gate to finish line.

Joe’s Notes

  • Two hunch-play exactas hit on Thursday: the Maryland hunch play of Old Bay and Boh’s N O’s (race 5: $16.10 for a buck) and the life philosophy hunch play of Play Hard and Work Hard (race 8: $11)…
  • Three riders – Axel Concepcion, Angel Arroyo, and Daniel Centeno – doubled on Thursday’s card…

Race #6 Picks: 2-4-7-8

In this $38,000 maiden race for two-year-olds at 7 ½ furlongs on the turf, #2 Hoya (8-1) is being stretched out after running evenly in a five-furlong sprint in his debut. Trainer Cathal Lynch has won at 34% in 58 starts with two-year-olds, and we have this gelding on top. #4 Willy D’s (8-1) has been working very well and looks ready to run. #7 Drilling for Gold (2-1) is a Twirling Candy colt that was purchased at the Keeneland sale for $300,000. He didn’t fire in his debut race at Saratoga but must be respected.

Race #7 Picks:  1-3-5-2

In this optional claiming/starter allowance race at one mile and 70 yards, #1 Tiger Moon (5-2) was running well at Oaklawn and is now coming to Delaware after a four-month absence. His work line looks good, and if he can run like he did at Oaklawn he should be able to top this field. #3 My Man Vito (6-1) has three wins in eight lifetime starts at Delaware. He faded in his last race but looks well placed here. #5 Fast Breakin Cash (9-5) won three straight at Parx but has not been in the top three finishers in his starts at Delaware Park.

Race #8 Picks: 4-3-5-2

In this $5000 claiming race at 1 1/16 miles, #4 Roaring River (6-5) has run two races since coming to Delaware. He faded in a sprint but ran well in a route race. He should like the longer distance today and we have him on top. #3 Night Ops (8-5) just missed last time out. He has not won in a couple years, so we will put him in the place position with some caution. #5 Melina’s Dream (8-1) has shown some speed and did win three races last year.
