Delaware Park picks and analysis: September 13, 2023
Live racing at Delaware Park kicks off May 24 and runs through late October.
Once again this year, we will have Delaware Park picks and analysis for every day of live racing at the venerable track. Today’s card features 10 races, and first post is 12:30 EDT.
Today’s carryovers: None
Race #1 Picks: 5-1-7-4
In this $6250 maiden claiming race at six furlongs, #5 Estilo Favorito (7-2) showed early speed but faded in his last last race. Looking for improvement off that effort today. #1 Hooey (2-1) is taking a major class drop. He did show some speed in New York over the summer and fits well with this group. #7 Dr. Roger (12-1) showed brief speed at Monmouth and is moving down the claiming ladder.
Race #2 Picks: 3-6-2-5
In this optional claiming/starter allowance race for fillies and mares at 5 ½ furlongs, #3 Utterly Enchanting (7-2) has been running well lately with superior speed figures to most of her foes in this race. We think she is the top competitor. #6 Golden Eib Micrphn (5-2) will be making her first start for Gregory Sacco, who wins at 24% in 21 attempts in first race after a claim. Rallied mildly in the slop at Monmouth and should be in the mix. #2 Protomagic (9-5) won and was claimed last time out. She has been running well and has a chance today.
Race #3 Picks: 13-7-3-12
This race was originally scheduled to be run on turf, but all races are off the turf today.

Race #4 Picks: 3-6-2-1
In this optional claiming/starter allowance race at six furlongs, there is lots of speed so we are going with a horse that can close. #3 Filigree (6-1) has been struggling but has been facing much tougher since coming to Delaware. He has shown the ability to close on the grass, and if he can translate that to dirt, he may surprise today. #6 Rebel Empire (8-1) has been in excellent form lately. He will take the lead and force the others to catch him. If he does not get caught in a duel and can get the lead he will be hard to catch. #2 Drena’s Star (9-5) has been getting fast starts at Monmouth and will be competing for the lead early. His speed figures are good enough to win and he is one to consider.
Race #5 Picks: 3-5-2-4
In this $12,500 claiming race at 5 ½ furlongs, #3 Money Mike (3-1) has been running evenly in Saratoga, which has better stock than he will face today. He ran second in his only lifetime start at Delaware and should be a contender today. #5 Shane’s Jewel (4-1) has early speed but tends to fade. He’s not facing any monsters today, and his early speed might carry further than usual. He should be in the mix. #2 Exacting (6-1) is another horse with early speed. He has only run two races this year, and has not run since May, so he might need a race. If he is fit, he should be in this mix.
Joe’s Notes
- Frontrunners took the Governors Day (Ardanwood with Joe Rocco, Jr. up) and the Rosenberger Memorial (Thisnameisokay, also Rocco).
- Rocco won three on the day, while Daniel Centeno and Kevin Gomez won two each…
Race #6 Picks: 9-2-7-4
In this optional claiming/starter allowance race at six furlongs, #9 Take A Hint (5-1) has two wins and three seconds in five lifetime starts. He is very consistent and has already beaten several others in this race. If he runs his best, he should come out on top. #2 Parkerness (3-1) won going away last time in his first race at Delaware. Delaware favors early speed and this horse has an abundance of it. It would not be a surprise if he wins again today. #7 Supreme Law (10-1) has two good recent dirt races and looks very well placed today. He is a definite contender.
Race #7 Picks: 4-1-7-5
This race was originally scheduled to be run on turf, but all races are off the turf today.
Race #8 Picks: 9-8-3-4
In this $10,000 maiden claiming race for fillies and mares at six furlongs, #9 Sundog (8-1) is moving way down the claiming ladder, and if she can repeat her last race, she has a good shot to finally leave the maiden ranks as a six-year-old. #8 Peace Pact (7-2) has improved in all three of her races and if she can take one more step up in performance, she has a shot of coming out on top. #3 Dats A Superstar (5-2) has some decent races under her belt but has not been able to get over the top. She should be involved again today.
