Delaware Park picks and analysis: September 14, 2023
Live racing at Delaware Park kicks off May 24 and runs through late October.
Once again this year, we will have Delaware Park picks and analysis for every day of live racing at the venerable track. Today’s card features eight races, and first post is 12:30 EDT.
Today’s carryovers: None
Race #1 Picks: 2-5-3-7
In this $20000 maiden claiming race for two-year-olds at six furlongs, #2 Wesley Thomas (9-2) held on gamely for second in last after a sluggish start at Timonium. He looks like he has learned how to race, and we have him on top today. #5 Honest Rogue (8-1) flashed speed and got the lead in last but faded. We are looking for him to improve and have more stamina today. #3 Catalina Kid (2-1} was facing tougher at Monmouth and will have Paco Lopez back aboard, who was on top when he ran a good debut race.
Race #2 Picks: 6-2-3-4
In this optional claiming/starter allowance race for fillies and mares at one mile, #6 Tiz Herself (6-5) wins a lot of races and will likely win again today. She will go off a heavy favorite so there may not be much value here, but it is hard to go against her. #2 Abidale (2-1) has been very successful at this level and will run on the pace, which is always an advantage at Delaware. #3 Anna Rocks (5-1) has shown some closing speed in her races this year. She was facing tougher earlier in the year and should compete well here.
Race #3 Picks: Picks 7-14-1-6
This race was originally scheduled to be run on turf, but all races are off the turf today.

Race #4 Picks: 9-6-1-7
In this $6250 N2L claiming race, #9 Sansa Ariel (3-1) had a rough trip against better at Timonium in last, is dropping down, and will have the leading rider aboard. She was running against tough competition here at Delaware earlier in the year and may have an advantage over these. #6 Anacarava (Ire) (12-1) ran evenly and passed tiring horses at this level at Parx. Parx shippers do well here, and we think she will compete well today. #1 Gem Cat (4-1) is coming from Monmouth for a high-percentage trainer and fits well with this group.
Race #5 Picks: Picks 6-7-3-2
This race was originally scheduled to be run on turf, but all races are off the turf today.
Race #6 Picks: 3-4-5-1
In this optional claiming/starter allowance race at 5 ½ furlongs, #3 No More Talk (5-2) has been facing tougher horses in New York and has been holding his own. He will be making his second start for Wayne Potts and he should do well here at Delaware Park. #4 Nottoway (8-5) has been running well this year and won going away in last. That was only eight days ago, and if he is still at peak performance level he can win again today. #5 First Rule (5-1) will be making his first start for Anthony Pecoraro after the claim. Has won two of his last three and will be in the mix.
Joe’s Notes
- Leading rider Jaime Rodriguez won three races Wednesday and now has a six-win lead over Kevin Gomez…
- Luckbealadytonight won the second race Wednesday for her fourth win of the meet, the most of any runner. Six horses have three wins…
- Six-year-old Sundog left the maiden ranks at long last in Wednesday’s nightcap, winning by eight as the 3-5 favorite. The mare is now 1-for-13…
Race #7 Picks: Picks: 4-3-6-10
This race was originally scheduled to be run on turf, but all races are off the turf today.
Race #8 Picks: 9-6-3-7
In this $28,000 maiden claiming race at one mile, #9 Rule Breaker (8-1) was pulled up at Saratoga in last but has a couple of workouts since then so there was no serious injury. He was running well in the spring, and if he is fit and ready, he could pay a big price today. #6 Martini Martin (5-1) ran second in last and beat the third-place finisher by nine lengths. Ran second here at Delaware back in June and is a top competitor today. #3 Whiskey Prize (4-1) has been facing good company at Parx and should find today’s competition a little easier than he has been facing.
