Delaware Park picks and analysis: October 5, 2023

Live racing at Delaware Park kicks off May 24 and runs through late October.

Once again this year, we will have Delaware Park picks and analysis for every day of live racing at the venerable track. Today’s card features eight races, and first post is 12:30 EDT.

Today’s carryovers: None

Race #1 Picks: 5-8-2-7

In this $28,000 maiden claiming race at one mile, #5 Stomping Moon (5-2) ran a sharp maiden special weight at Canterbury before shortening up to six furlongs in last. Now he will stretch back out to a mile, and he might be reaching peak form. #8 Whiskey Prize (2-1) seems to be rounding into form. He will be making his fourth start for Jamie Ness and second start at this claiming level. He looks like a contender. #2 Dangerous Mind (4-1) rallied to finish second in a similar race last time out. That was a good effort and he should be in the mix.

Race #2 Picks: 1-6-4-2

In this $15,000 claiming race for fillies and mares at 5 ½ furlongs, #1 Shesasuperfreak (4-1) has been running at Parx but has not been able to match the performances she had in the spring. Now she is coming to Delaware and not facing a particularly tough field She has a shot today. #6 Luckbealadytonight (3-1) has been running well this summer, winning four of her last five. If she continues that good form, she will be in the mix. #4 Awesome Birdie (6-1) has not raced for a year, but if she is fit and ready to run, she could win this race.

Race #3 Picks: 4-12-11-9

In this $16,000 maiden claiming race at five furlongs on the turf, #4 Ray’s Gone Astray (5-1) was in the hunt with $25,000 claimers at this distance. Then he ran a mile on the dirt in a race taken off the turf, and now he’s dropping and moving back to the turf. This looks like a good spot and we have him on top. #12 Barfly (4-1) will be making his second start for Tony Wilson after the claim.  He’s come close to leaving the maiden ranks several times and he could do it again today. #11 Ventilator (5-1) has lots of early speed and will be the one they are chasing late.

Race #4 Picks: 1-5-9-4

In this $6250 N2L claiming race for fillies and mares at one mile, #1 Fast Mule (3-1) has been away for several months since running against $12,000 claimers at Monmouth. Now dropping down the class ladder, and trainer Lindsay Schultz has won at 30% in 20 tries when bringing horses back from a 61- to 180-day layoff. #5 Gun of Gold (4-1) has shown flashes of early speed in her last few races at Monmouth. This filly is improving and fits well here. #9 My Cajun Lady (5-1) just missed at this level in last after dropping down and should be considered today.

Race #5 Picks: 11-7-9-5

In this $38,000 maiden special race for fillies and mares at 7 ½ furlongs on the turf, #11 Creole (8-1) just missed last time out. She just missed leaving the maiden ranks several times this summer and looks like a top contender today. #7 Heavenly Appointed (4-1) is a promising three-year-old that has been game in most of her races. Her speed figures are very solid. This might be the day when she makes it over the top and leaves the maiden ranks. #9 Treasured Gem (5-1) closed for a mild bid in a race that was taken off the turf in last. Now moving back to turf which looks like her preferred surface and this filly should be considered.

  • Peppermint Class won Wednesday’s allowance feature by a neck over late-running My Maggie Moo for her second win in seven career outings. Daniel Centeno was up for trainer Diane Morici.

Race #6 Picks: 7-8-1-6

In this optional claiming/second-level allowance race at one mile, #7 Boss Logic (7-2) is very consistent and seldom runs a bad race. He has four wins in seven attempts this year. He will be stalking the pace and is a top contender #8 Wild Banker (5-2) has been running in optional claiming state-bred races in New York. That was fairly tough company, and he may have a slight class advantage over this field. #1 St Andrews (9-2) won a first-level allowance at this distance last time out and fits with this group.

Race #7 Picks: 5-6-10-1

In this $28,000 claiming race at one mile and 70 yards on the turf, #5 Eddie the Great (8-1) is a deep closer who has been running against better company in New York. He is taking a class drop today and we expect a lot of improvement. #6 Provision (3-1) will be making his first start for Orlando Noda. He struggled at Monmouth but if can match his New York races he will be very competitive today. #10 Gratia Prince (5-1) has some good races this year in new Jersey and Florida and should be considered.

Race #8 Picks: 2-5-8-9 In this $6250 claiming race at 5 ½ furlongs, #2 Dart (6-1) will be making his first start for Wayne Potts after the clam. This horse ran some good races at Monmouth. He looks good in this spot, and Potts wins at 28% on first race after a claim. #5 Starstreet (3-1) won two straight at Colonial Downs. His good form might carry into today’s race. #8 Big Save (8-1) won his first race under new trainer Wayne Potts who has two horses entered in this contest. If he can repeat that race he will have a chance to win today.
