Maryland bucks ’23 trend as national foal crop falls
The Jockey Club reported October 18 that 1,248 stallions covered 28,548 mares in North America during 2022, according to statistics compiled through October 8, 2023. These breedings have resulted in 18,143 live foals of 2023 being reported to The Jockey Club on Live Foal Reports.
The Jockey Club estimates that the number of live foals reported so far is 85-90 percent complete. The reporting of live foals of 2023 is down 2.5 percent from last year at this time when The Jockey Club had received reports for 18,609 live foals of 2022.
Among states in the top 10, four – Maryland, Indiana, New York, and Kentucky – showed year-over-year gains versus 2022 reports. Maryland’s foal crop to this point is up 3.5% versus a year ago, with 498 live foals reported, versus 481 in 2022.
The Jockey Club estimates that the number of live foals reported so far is approximately 85-90 percent complete.
On the other side of the ledger, Pennsylvania suffered the biggest decline in percentage terms. The Keystone State saw a 26.5% drop in the number of live foals, falling from 340 a year ago to 250 this year.
In 2022, 744 mares were bred to 26 Maryland stallions. Murmur Farm’s Blofeld was the most prolific stallion, with 61 live foal reports from 86 mares covered.

In total, the Jockey Club reported that 1,248 stallions covered 28,548 mares during 2022, a decline from the 1,303 stallions who covered 29,065 mares in 2021.
The foal crop decline marked the eighth consecutive year in which the number of live foals fell versus the prior year and the 17th in the last 18. In 1990 the North American foal crop topped 44,000.
