Delaware Park picks and analysis: November 1, 2023

Live racing at Delaware Park kicks off May 24 and runs through late October.

Once again this year, we will have Delaware Park picks and analysis for every day of live racing at the venerable track. Today’s card features eight races, and first post is 12:30 EDT.

Today’s carryovers: None

Race #1 Picks: 6-4-2-1

In this $6250 maiden claiming race for fillies and mares at one mile and 70 yards, #6 American Odalisque (9-5) has been away from racing for over four months and is making her first start for Brittany Russell. She has been working well and Russell wins at 32% in 95 tries when bringing back horses from a 61-180-day layoff. #4 Exageradora (5-2) has run well at this level in her last two and should be in the mix. #2 Peace Pact (4-1) has been in contention in several races this year and should be considered.

Race #2 Picks: 1-2-6-3

In this $12,500 N2L claiming race for fillies and mares at six furlongs, #1 Bali Moon (9-5) made a late charge to finish third in last. If she can improve off that effort, she should be able to handle this field. #2 Lady Lancer (10-1) has been struggling since winning a maiden race on the turf in August. She has been steadily dropping down the claiming ladder and has found a soft spot today. She looks well placed here. #6 For Cryin Out Loud (3-2) is returning to Michael Gorham after being away for several races. She had some decent races this summer here at Delaware Park while being trained by Gorham.

Race #3 Picks: 5-2-4-1

In this $12,500 claiming race at six furlongs, #5 Bright Forecast (9-2) has been close to winning at higher claiming levels and will now run at $12,500 for the first time.  His speed figures look solid and match up very well with this group. We have him on top today. #2 Leaoflittlefaith (2-1) has a lot of early speed and should be able to compete for the lead today. Moving back to a sprint after competing in route races and he looks like a top contender today. #4 Moon Connection (9-5) is making his second start for McLean Robertson and should improve today.

Race #4 Picks: 4-2-3-5

In this optional claiming/starter allowance race for two-year-olds at six furlongs, #4 War Master (9-5) won his debut race at Laurel going away. Now Jamie Ness is bringing him to Delaware after only two weeks and his form should hold. We expect him to run another big race today. #2 Yahoo Omar (7-2) just missed last time out when he finished a half-length behind Bati King. He was in a duel in that race and if he can get loose on the lead today he might get the top money. #3 Bati King (5-2) closed well last time when he passed Yahoo Omar in the final strides to win. He fits well here again and looks like a contender.

Race #5 Picks: 4-3-2-5

In this $25,000 claiming race at 5 ½ furlongs, #4 Chief Ron (3-2) is winless this year but has been facing tough competition. He ran third in the Alapocas Run Stakes in June. His speed figures are superior to his foes’ today, and he looks the best of this group.  #3 Spikezone (3-1) has not raced since January. He is a speed burner who will get the lead if he is fit and ready. He has been working well and looks like a top contender if he is in shape. #2 Where Paradise Lay (5-1) had some good races earlier in the year and will be looking to return to that form.

Joe’s Notes

  • With the last week of the season upon us, jockey Jaime Rodriguez has a five-win lead (60-55) over Kevin Gomez for the riding title…
  • Post time on closing day — Saturday, November 4 — will be moved up to 12:05…

Race #6 Picks: 5-6-2-7

In this $16,000 claiming race at six furlongs, #5 Nick’s Little Boy (5-2) back ran second at this level two back. Trainer Philip Capuano has six wins in sixteen starts this year at Delaware. This gelding looks the best of this group. #6 The Great Gazoo (9-5) has been running well, closing to finish second in his last two races. He fits well with this group and should be in the mix again today. #2 Ventilator (5-1) left the maiden ranks in last. He has lots of early speed and could surprise if he gets loose on the lead.

Race #7 Picks: 6-2-5-3

In this $45,000 open allowance race at six furlongs, #6 Spun and Won (6-1) will be making his first start for David Jacobsen after the claim. He won his most recent race and is in good form. We have him on top today. #2 No Sabe Nada (7-2) has three wins in five starts at Delaware Park this meet. He has been running well against tough competition and looks like a top contender. #5 Pirate Rick (5-2) was racing in graded stakes races earlier this year. He struggled in a stakes race in last but has enough back class to be very competitive today.

Race #8 Picks: 5-3-1-2

In this $12,500 claiming race at six furlongs, #5 Tap First (7-2) has been facing tougher at Monmouth. Now coming to Delaware and moving down in class and he may have a slight class advantage over this group. Trainer Silvino Ramirez has 4 wins in 7 races at Delaware this year. #3 Money Mike (9-5) will be making his first start for Elliot Sullivan after the claim. He will be making his second start at Delaware after running in New York.  He fits well with this group. #1 Just Plain Ornery (5-2) won by 14 lengths in last when running a route. Now cutting back to a sprint and should be in the mix today.
