Capo prevails in Pennsylvania Nursery
Well, that’s looking like a good claim.
Owner-trainer Jacinto Solis reached into a $20,000 maiden claimer for two-year-olds at Churchill Downs November 2 to grab Capo. In less than four weeks, the Peace and Justice gelding has already begun to pay dividends.
Under an astute Kendrick Carmouche ride, Capo narrowly won Tuesday’s $100,000 Pennsylvania Nursery Stakes at Parx Racing to improve to 2-for-3 in his budding career and earn Solis $69,000.
Capo was a well-beaten fourth in his debut August 9 on the synthetic at Presque Isle Downs but bounced back nicely to break his maiden by over three lengths in the Churchill race from which Solis took him. Still, the Nursery, for Pennsylvania-breds, seemed like a heavy lift; bettors sent him off at 23-1.
Instead of Capo, bettors turned their eyes towards Notice of Action, three-for-three, all over the strip, including a win in the Prince Lucky, making him 2.20-1; and debut winner Uncle Heavy, off as the 6-5 favorite.
Uncle Heavy’s race was pretty much over at the start. The Social Inclusion colt dwelt at the start, spotting the field a big gap, before rallying mildly into fifth.
Notice of Action, on the other hand, was well placed throughout under Andy Hernandez. He was third or fourth throughout and never more than a couple of lengths away.
Twilight Dancer and Factor U and Me In dueled for the pace advantage, the former leading by just a head after a half-mile in 47.34 seconds. Carmouche and Capo were just a length back by then in third, and the duo kept Notice of Action hemmed in behind horses at the rail. Spinning off the turn, it looked for a moment as if a rail opening might develop, but Twilight Dancer held position there while Capo moved to the attack to his outside.
Notice of Action finally did get free in mid-stretch but could do no better than third, finishing 2 ¼ lengths back. Up front, Capo prevailed over Twilight Dancer by a nose. Running time for the seven furlongs on a fast main track was 1:27.75.
Capo paid $48.00 to win. With a 9-2 runner-up, the exacta returned $374.20 for a two-dollar wager.
Capo is now 2-for-3 in his career with earnings of $94,020. He was bred in Pennsylvania by A1A Racing.
