Jevian Toledo, Greeley and Ben star in Laurel stakes

Jevian Toledo won twice and Greeley and Ben kept on trucking in Laurel Park’s four-stake card Saturday.

The track hosted a pair of stakes for older fillies and mares and a pair for three-year-olds and up, all with purses of $100,000.

Toledo took the middle two stakes on the card. In the $100,000 Dave’s Friend Stakes for older runners, Greeley and Ben rallied from last early and widest of all to get up late for a neck score. Then one race later in the $100,000 Carousel Stakes for fillies and mares, Saddle Up Jessie surged to command on the far turn then drew clear late to a 4 3/4-length score.

“It feels good to win two stakes, especially back-to-back,” Toledo said. “On that mare I wanted to get away in good position, then I steadied a little when the 5-horse [Peyton Elizabeth] dropped over on me. But once we settled my mare was really good. She did it pretty easily. Then on [Greeley and Ben], I wanted to save ground on the far turn, but I knew he has a really good finishing kick. When I got him to the outside, I knew he was going by those other horses.”

Greeley and Ben was still in eighth and nearly six lengths back with just a furlong to go. But rallying to victory is what he does.

A nine-year-old Greeley’s Conquest gelding trained by Horacio De Paz for owner Darryl Abramowitz, Greeley and Dan recorded his second win in three seasonal outings and now owns a remarkable 25 wins and nearly $1 million banked from 42 career tries. It also marked the first trip to Laurel for Abramowitz, who planned to provide the durable gelding with his favorite treats immediately after the race.

“I’ve always believed that if you do right by the horse the horse will do right by you,” Abramowitz said. “I had never been to Laurel before, but Horacio convinced me to head down here. This horse is such a cool horse. How many horses win 25 races in 42 starts? He loves donuts and Pop Tarts, and he’s going to get plenty of them today.”

In the day’s first stake, jockey Angel Cruz steered Headland to a mild upset as the 7-5 second choice in the $100,000 Willa On the Move Stakes for fillies and mares for trainer George Weaver, who celebrated his 52nd birthday on Saturday. A seven-year-old Paynter mare owned by Thomas Brockley, Headland concluded her 2023 campaign with a 3-2-3 slate and over $280,000 banked from 11 starts and now sports 11 wins and over $750,000 banked from 44 career tries after getting the 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:18.46.

“She broke really well and I was able to sit just outside [Dream Chaser] down the backside,” Cruz said. “Then when I asked her for a little speed on the turn she responded nicely. I have not heard what their plans are with her, but I think she’ll probably run in the next stakes here [What A Summer] next month then come back for the Fritchie in February. I think she’ll like going seven [furlongs].”

Then in the final stake of the quartet, graded winner Double Crown, with Jeiron Barbosa up, rallied from just off the pace to forge a 10-1 upset when he nailed 3-5 choice Offaly Cool in the final strides for a nose victory.

A Maryland-bred six-year-old Bourbon Courage gelding trained by Raymond Ginter, Jr. for owner Built Wright Stables, Double Crown concluded a busy 2023 campaign with three wins from 18 tries and now owns a 9-10-5 slate and nearly $840,000 Banked from 44 lifetime outings after getting the one-mile and one-sixteenth in 1:44.65.

“Jeiron deserves all the credit for this win,” Ginter said. “This horse just ran seven days ago. He was near a fast pace that day and got tired late. But today Jeiron rode a great race. He deserves the credit for this win.”
