Laurel Park cancels Jan. 21 card
Laurel Park has canceled its Sunday, January 21 live racing card, the track said Saturday. It marks the third consecutive day canceled at the central Maryland track.
The cancellation is a result of “the lingering effects of the recent snow storm,” according to a message to horsemen. A snowstorm hit the area Thursday night, dumping three inches on the state, and snow continued to fall throughout Friday.
Laurel has canceled all three of its scheduled racing days this weekend. The track had been slated to host four stakes on Jan. 20, two for Maryland-breds and two open stakes, the Fire Plug and What a Summer, that often serve as preps for next month’s Grade 3 sprints, the General George for the boys and Barbara Fritchie for fillies and mares, respectively.
But those races had to be moved as a result of the cancellation. The What a Summer and Fire Plug will serve as extra races for the January 26 card, while the two Maryland-bred stakes, the Geisha and Jennings, will be extras for Sunday’s card Jan. 28.
Assuming all four of the stakes fill when redrawn, Laurel will host six stakes next weekend: two each on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
Training at Laurel and Pimlico will go on as normal on Sunday.
